Why One Piece?

So many people upendo One Piece. So I watched about thirty episodes in hopes that it would get better. It's pretty cheesy, the art is iffy, and they're all overly hyper.
Does the onyesha get better? Like on with the plot. Do the fighting scenes improve? Does Luffy EVER mature????

Sorry for my ranting....

Thanks for replying! I continued watching a little more, and I'm finding that I am (slowly) starting to enjoy it little kwa little. Of course, it'll probably never be my favorite, but I can now see the appeal. Thanks!:D
