There is thing that I have seen around various places called 'Ask An Atheist Day', which is where Atheists encourage people from all religions and even other Atheists and Agnostics, to ask them about what Atheism really is and what it means to people. Basically, it is a chance for Atheists to directly interact, in a positive way, with people who perhaps don't understand what Atheism is.
So what I was thinking was that I could set up a forum in this spot called something like "The Ask-An-Atheist Forum" and post a link maybe in the Debate Spot at first, so that we can encourage people to actually ask us about what Atheism means to us.
Lately, we have a number of people from other religions coming to this spot and basically trying to rip us to shreds or convert us, and I think we have all noticed that they have some pretty funny ideas about what Atheism is. Also, there has been quite a lot of crap happening in the Debate Spot and in the Christianity Spot, and a lot of it really centres around people making weird assumptions about what Atheism entails.
I just wondered if maybe if we opened a dialogue with people where we can just honestly answer honest questions, we might make some progress in minimizing the abuse that gets thrown at everybody involved. The issue here is that we then open ourselves up to the people who are only interested in yelling at us. And we all know a bad apple or two will show up. Obviously, we will set up guidelines and explain that this is an exercise in communication and understanding, not a soapbox opportunity. But I do worry about actively inviting people to question us here...
Of course, maybe no one will even ask anything, so this is all kinda hypothetical at this point anyway.
So anyone have any thoughts? Alternatives? Scrap the whole thing?

I think it's a great idea, especialy when I remeber the "soulsavers" (XD). I just hope it will work.
On which spots did you plan to post the link (besides the debate spot)?

The comparative religion spot? (though that's not really an active spot unfortunately)

Yeah, I thought about the Comparative Religion spot, but did check it out and saw that it wasn't that active. I guess it wouldn't hurt to post a link there though. I'm not sure I'm happy about posting it to any spots that are dedicated to a specific religion. Most of them are actually pretty dead anyway.
