As for Nate, they are on and off the entire series until the end when he can't decide between her and Serena and ends up ditching both of them. But don't expect this to happen: the books and the show are entirely different entities.

and though serena is meant to be her best mate, most of the 'off' time serena is with nate (or jenny is/ or that phycho girl from rehab)
