I don't like really long chapters unless they are those kind of books you just can't put down.

Shorter chapters are boring. All this stuff happens in like 5 chapters when it could be 1! Example, I recently read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, and it has REALLY short chapters. When this one character is telling this really long story to Mrs. Frisby, it takes like 6 chapters, whereas when I was reading I was thinking this could all be 1 chapter if it was in Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings!

It depends. For instance, the Blue Bloods Saga books have very short chapters, and I love them. I can't imagine them with chapters any longer. But I can't imagine the book Shug with shorter chapters.

because then its easier to find an exact spot from where you left off and when i don't want to read too much i read a few small chapters instead of more huge chapters

I don't really care, I think it depends on the book. I don't really notice, I hardly even notice what the chapters are called, I just want to know what happens next.

The most irritating writing style is those books which have cliffhangers at the end of every chapter. I mean, its an effective way to never let you put the book down but I usually stop when I finish chapters. When there's a cliffhanger I have to know what happened! That way I get stuck reading on the couch until I get a sore butt from sitting in the same position for so long.

It makes it easier to pick it up again.

And to explain what I mean:
I'm currently reading Lord Of The Flies, in which the chapters are 20 pages (approx.). Everyday (also approx.), I read on the bus while I travel to school. Well, it is rather difficult to stop reading in the middle of a chapter. On top of that, when I return after school for my voyage home, I can never remember where I had left off on the page. Thus, I restart from the top of the left hand page. (Consequently, I find myself rereading paragraphs often.)

It is annoying. >_<
---

@ Faith-Rulz, the length of a book has NOTHING to do with the length of the chapters. The Faber and Faber edition of Lord of the Flies (which as mentioned, I am currently reading) has only 223. Meanwhile, the chapters are 20 pages long (approx.).

ugh. Please forgive any typos found in this comment. It's been a long day.

Yeah honestly, I was just thinking about this last night. I'm reading two different books right now, both with super long chapters, and it's much more challenging, even when one of the books should theoretically be really easy. When a book has shorter chapters I end up finishing it so fast because every time there's a pause I just think "okay, well I have time for one more chapter" and that cycle continues.

it's easy to find a stopping point and I like to read at least a chapter a day and with a busy day that can be hard with long chapters

Because I like to finish chapters before putting books down and sometime I need to put a book down abruptly.
