"I Can't Lose You"
Elena noticing that Damon had left the room and then going to find him could be zaidi significant than it first appears. (This was only brought to my attention after someone ametoa maoni on this on YouTube). Remember the scene between Damon and Stefan in 2x19, when Stefan boasted that he had the one thing Damon didn't, Elena's respect? Well, this scene proves that Stefan is wrong about that. If Elena didn't have respect for Damon, au Damon's opinions, then she wouldn't have gone to find him. She knows he's angry and upset about the plan involving the elixir, and seeks him out because she 'needs him to understand' what she's doing.
Damon: Why? It clearly doesn't matter what I think.
Actually, he's wrong. Elena going to find him proves she DOES care about what he thinks, very much so. Elena tries to reassure him that the plan will work, but Damon is convinced it won't. In fact, even the remotest chance that it might not work is reason enough for him to discard this mystical elixir and look for another way. He's not going to risk losing her forever. When Elena takes his hand in her's and says 'You won't', it's a very intimate gesture that says a lot about how well she understands him and what he means to her.
Interestingly enough for Stefan and SE, it's only after Stefan is alerted to what's going on that he finally springs into action. And in spite of what Damon has done, Elena still tries to intervene/restrain Stefan when he throws Damon into a wall. Even though the scene is about Elena, it ends with her trying to soothe and comfort Stefan, which is ironic really. Shouldn't HE be the one comforting HER?
Thoughts:
Although we can't always agree with what Damon does, (especially if they're impulsive, reckless, stupid decisions that will inevitably backfire), we can always understand, at least to some degree, why he does them. Yes, force-feeding Elena his blood was wrong on so many levels, but I'm not sure if he would have gone to such extremes in the first place if Stefan hadn't been strangely unmoved at the prospect of Elena's death, au if Elena had adopted a zaidi fighting spirit. For example, when Damon asks her what she'll do if the elixir doesn't work, she serenely replies: 'Then I guess I'll just be dead.' Um, what?? What about her family, her friends, Stefan?? How will they feel when she's dead? How will Jeremy cope, when he's Lost his parents, Vicki and Anna?? I get that Elena wants to sacrifice herself for those she loves, but she should at least want to fight to stay alive for their sakes too.
Stefan probably doesn't like the sound of this elixir thing either, but he remains passive to the point where wewe begin to wonder if he actually cares that his girlfriend might die. I believe Julie when she says that Damon has to learn the hard way that wewe have to give the person wewe upendo the freedom to make their own choices but I think Stefan was pushing it a bit on this occasion.
But back to Damon: force-feeding Elena his blood showed us one thing: that he desperately loves Elena. Was it selfish? Yes. And terrible, and crazy and wrong. But if I loved someone so much that I couldn't imagine living in a world without them - wouldn't I do anything to save them too?
This is why it irritates me beyond belief whenever people start using words like 'abuse' and even 'rape' when it comes to this scene. I think comparing this scene to sexual abuse is an insult to victims. Damon isn't forcing Elena to have sex with him, he's trying to save her life. To put a scene when Damon is forcing Elena to drink his blood in the same box as rape undermines the severity of rape and sexual abuse.
"...He doesn't really know what upendo is."
Now this presents a conundrum for DE fans. When Stefan tells Elena that Damon force-fed her his blood because he loves her, Elena says:
'But he did this to me, Stefan, which means he doesn't really know what upendo is. And to be honest, I don't know if I do. I'm seventeen years old, how am I supposed to know any of this yet? I know that I upendo wewe Stefan. I know that. But my future? Our lives together? Those were things I was supposed to deal with as they came along.' (She then talks about growing up, whether she wants to have children, and starts to cry, before admitting she doesn't want to be a vampire.)
If Elena is saying that she doesn't know what upendo really is because she's so young, then how can she determine whether Damon knows au not? How can she even be sure if she loves Stefan if she doesn't know what upendo is? Is it just me, au is she contradicting herself?
Perhaps one reason why Elena is holding off from forever is because turning into a vampire would cement her future with Stefan. It sounds like that's too big a committment for her to make right now. If Elena was one-hundred percent certain that Stefan was The One, then maybe she wouldn't be as scared. Maybe the possibility of dying in the ritual is a way out, because this way, she won't have to face the insurmountable maswali regarding her future with Stefan. As much as she claims to upendo him, she's not ready to give up her dreams of becoming an adult, getting married, having kids...and Stefan understands that. But her life is going to change, and his won't. So where does that leave their relationship? Her path will take her further away from him.
One thing Elena is wrong about is saying that Damon doesn't know what upendo is. And the fact that she says it kind of proves how little about upendo SHE really knows. The difference between them is that Damon has never been loved kwa anyone before.
"2x20 showed that Damon and Elena are both on journeys in love..Damon learning how to deal with it and Elena learning what it really is…Damon already learned what it is but he doesn’t know how to handle it cause he’s never had it returned….Elena has had it returned but she doesn’t know quite yet what TRUE upendo is."
