They will always love each other somehow cause they're friends but not as a couple. That was the source of all their disagreements in fact. There was no trust with P and J. IMO, they were very overrated. Also FYI, the original ending was written for Joey and Dawson to end up together, but it was changed because the WB said they wouldn't air it unless she ended up with Pacey. That was what I read anyway. No matter who they ended up with (Dawson alone, which was really sad), imo they were still very much in love with each other. Definitely more than friendship! Also, I don't know what you mean by without pressure from Joey and Pacey. They were together and in love before Joey was with Pacey. And it was pretty big, exciting and fresh. Pacey and Joey were a dysfunctional, toxic couple. And it really made no sense whatsoever for them to end up together. They hadn't been together in ages and seemed well over each other! That ending was a sham. Case in point: Joey said that she's always known who she would end up with. That was most definitely not Pacey! In the beginning she couldn't stand to even be around him! Obviously she was referring to Dawson, who else?!?!!? Then mid stream the writers decided to change the ending.
