I got off the bus and walked over to the collage apartments where my mother and I had lived for as long as I could remember. We didn't have the money to get a house but I guess that didn't really matter since it was just the two of us...
I got to room 605, our room, and went in. The door was unlocked since I didn't have a spare key and my mother didn't get nyumbani till late.
I sighed and flopped down on the couch. I hated coming nyumbani to no one there. It made me feel so alone...
After a moment I got up and went to my room, throwing my bookbag in the corner and laying down on my bed. I stared at the picture that hung at the head of the bed. It was a picture of me as a baby, my mother, and my father...my father left when I was 6 and I have very few and faded memories of him. He'd left my mother for another woman and I've heard he treats her kids better than me...he never bothered to get in touch with me after the divorce and never showed up for birthdays au hollidays of any kind...
My eyes filled with tears. Even though I barely remembered him, he was still my dad and it hurt to think that he didn't care enough to check on me after all these years...I turned my back to the picture. Come to think of it, why did I even hang it there? All it did was cause me pain...
"Quater? Are wewe home?"
I sat up and dried my eyes. It couldn't be time for my mom to be nyumbani from work already? I got up and went to the living room where my neighbor, a collage student, Stacy, stood, looking around.
"Yeah I'm here..."
She smiled when she saw me standing there, "hey sweetie. Your mom wanted me to see if wewe made it home."
"Well I'm here so..."
Stacy tilted her head a little, "what's wrong?"
"Nothing...just thinkin about my dad again..."
"Ohh I see..."
I bit my lip, feeling the tears starting to come back, "yeah, it's no big deal..."
Stacy stared at me a moment then walked up and hugged me. I cried in her shoulder, "how could he just cut me out of his life like that?"
"I don't know, honey. He'd have to be real messed up in the head to want to ignore you. Your a beautiful young girl and only a fool wouldn't want to be apart of your life."
I just sniffled and let her pet my hair. Stacy was like my big sister. I could always count on her to be there for me.
After a moment I stopped crying. We pulled away and Stacy patted my head, "you okay now?" I nodded. Stacy smiled, "well have to get back and study. Haller if wewe need me," she waved and walked out. I waved back then sat on the kitanda and watched TV till I fell asleep.
