But it might be kind of hard because wouldn't they have to check that it was a repeat pick first and not just someone reporting a pick they thought was stupid... ?

This would be the most genius thing ever! I know some people are not aware that they are repeating a pick but some people just add the same pick to annoy us!

I am talking about picks that are clearly repeated not a stupid pick. Some of the spots I am part of have the same pick more than 10 times and 99% of the time they are being made by children that are trying to be annoying.

I want to know who picked no and why? What is the sense of adding the same pick if you can just go answer the original question? Other than the fact that one is unaware that a pick is repeated there is no reason to want to add it again.

i'd say sometimes. The whole "favourite character" kind of pick can be done a few times i think but has to be spread over time since more people join and not a lot of people like searching through pages of picks and new people come to shows. But i've seen things posted an hour later that's the same pick...not necessary.

Well that is why people let you add choices to their pick. If there is already a pick about a favorite character on a show and your favorite isn't on the list, then add it to the original question.

yeah but there are spots like Scrubs and Simpsons that have HEAPS of pages of picks (yes i know there is search) but newer people don't really use the search much and i don't see a problem with that type of pick done a few times.

I know but that is the awesome part of the feature. Reporting something as repeated or miscategorized is nothing against the user. I know that some people are prone to make mistakes and accidentally repeat a pick or place it in the wrong spot. Don't you think that if we got rid of all the repeated picks that the list of picks might shorten?

its annoying to the creator of the original pick to know that there is another pick just like his/hers that people might be answering instead of his/hers. i had that problem just yesterday.

I have this problem almost everyday in the One Tree Hill spot. When you try to be civil and let them know that is when they get worse and send you hate mail, leave rude comments or just make the pick 10 more times on purpose. I swear every pick in that spot consists of the same thing.

Yes - that is my pet peeve!

I don't bother reading ALL the picks anymore which is sad because it used to be a reason I logged on.

This is a good idea of reporting a repeated picks. I think you could leave a comment for Dave at suggestion forum but this is more visible and you can get this as a petition if you get good votes :)

It is really easy for us 'seasoned' members of Fan-pop to be able to say that we should delete a repeat pick.

However how does a new member know if a pick has been used or not? Should they scroll through the numerous pages to have a look, can they search for a pick 'key word'??

I think from a community point of view this is just wrong; it could be seen as "Your contribution does not count"...Maybe a different system could be used, but deletion by a moderator should not be one of them, An e-mail, Private Message, Forum, Warnings...???

I don't know but you have to make it fair for everyone and someone just checking out the site and then deciding to add a pick may not come back if we turn around and delete it because they did not have the foresight to check if the pick was done before...

I hate to disagree with the majority but sometimes we forget that we were new, we made the mistakes and we were guided onto a better path by the more experienced members, deletion is not the way!

- After reading the question again...maybe the person who created the site should moderate it..? They could add moderator remarks..."Thus; politely pointing out that the Pick has been done before and that it has been moved to a archive section of the spot...?

Well I understand that new users make the mistake but many people on here may agree in that the people that repeat picks are not new so it's not like they don't know how to search. I also know that it seems harsh to delete a pick but my idea is for us to just be able to report a repeated pick so that Fanpop can take care of it.

I just wonder if people (bad) will just click on the button for the fun of it...??

I think the idea of a moderator for a spot is a good one...you get them for every forum you go on...Also it gives a little responsibility to the person that starts the spot...

I may be a little work for the people that have started a lot of spots but it comes with the territory...

We used to have moderators if you had a die-hard or fanatic medal but that privilege was taken away because of the petty people who abused of the privilege. It angers me that the responsible people have to pay for the immature ones.

I agree with the spot creators having more control but there are still over-zealous people who will definitely abuse of that privilege as well. I think Fanpop should have full control of what goes on in spots that way everything remains fair. In a perfect world your idea is brilliant Dominator.

Time for the Lords of Fanpop to chime in. :) As much as we would LOVE to not have repeat picks, it's almost impossible to deal with. The reason is that there's no way for us to immediately detect if a pick is repeated so we can remove it. Once someone votes, we don't think we should delete a pick and take away their self-expression because it was a repeated pick they voted on and not the original. We also don't want to penalize new users who want to dive into Fanpop but didn't do a search, it turns them off from Fanpop. If there was a way to merge the picks, that would be great, but it's technically not possible since people word questions and answers differently. I know it's annoying to see SO many of the same questions asked over and over again (BRUCAS!?!). I think the best solution is either to not vote on repeat picks or vote on ALL the repeat picks to make your opinion REALLY known. :) I myself am guilty of being too lazy to look for repeat picks as well, especially since people spell things funny and word their picks differently. The same problem goes for repeated videos and images. In the end, although they're kinda annoying (like paying taxes), we have to live with them. It's one of the difficulties a lot of social user-generated sites like ours have to deal with (repeated pictures on flickr, multiple celebrity profiles on MySpace, multiple repeated videos on YouTube, same questions asked on Yahoo! Answers. I know it's not the answer you all wanted to hear, but I hope you understand our reasoning!

It's a good question though...I wish there were an easy solution.

One idea is that as the quantity of picks gets larger and more cumbersome in an individual spot would be the idea of grouping picks into collections or clusters. These pick lists be editorially selected (by someone like kathiria82 or another fan) which might mean a more discriminating selection of picks questions. I dunno, I'm just thinking out loud here...

But we've also spent time thinking about a class of spots that would give the creators more control too. There's a lot of give-and-take and balance considerations that need to be thought through before we move on any of these though.

but thanks for all the thoughtful comments. I see fanpop as an evolutionary process (where we iterate and improve the site over time with a lot of user input).
