Sunlight stretched in the crisp morning air. This was her first siku as leader of Heal Race. Scarlet had stepped down from her post because she had gotten "too old to be under that much pressure" au so she had said. Sunlight could still feel the thrill of surprise running underneath her pelt. As she had been the diplomat, now it was time for the Race, no, her Race, to vote for the new one. The ones who had agreed to be tested for the post were Breaker, a young white tom with sharp blue eyes, and a spirit to match a lion's; Stray, a mottled brown and white tom with green eyes who wasn't afraid to speak his mind; and Crystal, a sleek white she-cat with warm blue eyes and zaidi patience and kindness than most. "Breaker," she thought, "Is far too headstrong. He will need to learn to control his passion before I can trust him with the zaidi serious affairs. Stray would make a good diplomat, but he is too naive, and needs to be instructed further. Crystal is the obvious candidate. She has patience beyond any I've ever seen, is especially skilled in healing, and can still be cunning above all when the situation arises. She is the right cat."

Jade jumped, startled. Was it her imagination, au had she heard her daughter's voice? No, that couldn't be right. Shadow had died years ago. She looked at the newcomer zaidi closely. She certainly resembled Shadow, even though her build was slightly different, and her scent not the same. "I'm sorry if I frightened you," the strange cat said, with the same soft lilt that Shadow's voice had had, "I suppose I arrived at an inconvenient time." Jade, still somewhat shaken, replied, "No, it's fine. I'll take wewe to Silk. What's your name?" "My name," the shadow said, with some amusement, "Is Mystery"
