I know he/she was supposed to in the anime but I wasn't sure if it was mentioned in the manga.

Nope. She was sickly, though. The anime changed a few things (and the manga wasn't finished when the anime started- so it's sort of understandable.) I think dying young was a fear of her's, however- I assume it was triggered because her father died young.
