So are all the Sohma's related?

I'm confused and curious? there not all related right, at least not closely. From what i gathered there a enormous family and have lots of relatives and things like that and the curse is passed down. Can somebody help me understand this?

So yes... i think they are all somehow related, even if it's not genetically.
