[DOUBLE REVIEW] Joshua: Girls\' Generation - \'Catch Me If You Can\'
Note: This is a double review, you can view Eric\'s review here.
Girls\' Generation released their music video just yesterday for their new single "Catch Me If You Can." No doubt, just from the sheer number of views after a single day, the music video already has all the boys trying to catch them. As a fan, I can proudly say that at this point in the girls\' careers, it would be surprising to not see at least a million views on the first day of its release (make that half a day).
Now, I know there are already haters out there who claim that the song just doesn\'t cut it or didn\'t meet their expectations. Although I\'m a fan, with this new song, I might just be one of them this time. But if you\'re like me, you might be one of those fans who just need to listen to it a couple more times to really know if you like the song or watch it a couple more times to know if you like the video. To maybe help you solidify your thoughts, take a look at my take below.
Honestly speaking, I had doubts about this one from the get-go. I sat down. Put on my headphones. Went on YouTube. Clicked on their music video. Listened and watched. Came out disappointed.
My major initial problem with the song was that the girls had to go down a route I had hoped to never see: EDM. Yes, electronic dance music that is booming all around the world. It\'s certainly the "in" thing to do, but I had really hoped for something less basic than EDM. I was not a happy child after my first viewing.
The second element I\'m still not too convinced on is the lyrics. I didn\'t find the lyrics too appealing. Somewhere along the lines of Girls\' Generation history, the girls turned from the cute girls confessing their love to the oppas to girls who know they\'ve got it. The lyrics are pompous to say the least and frankly speaking, I didn\'t enjoy.
On the other hand, I thought about the bigger picture. Perhaps, the girls are showing us another side of womanhood. It\'s been several years since their debut and the girls can no longer just be the sweet little girls they were. They\'ve grown past the point where they have the (fan)boys just chasing them and now they\'re enjoying the attention they\'re gaining. In a way, the girls are showing a more playful side of being a woman: the tease.
The concept is both fresh and typical for Girls\' Generation.
The girls always had a talent for transforming the normal, everyday people into awesome mediums for comebacks. They were mannequins in "
Gee," cheerleaders in "Oh!" taxi drivers in "Mr. Taxi," doctors/nurses in "Mr.Mr.," and now they\'re construction site workers! On a single platform in the middle of the construction grounds, the girls danced away in sexy construction costumes. While both appealed to the eyes, I have to say the latter costume was my favorite. It stayed true to the theme of construction grounds and it was less ridiculous looking than I had expected.
Unlike most of their previous music videos, the girls stuck to the dancing and they really stuck to it. This time, the fans didn\'t get much storyline but instead were presented with four minutes of fierce dancing. I\'m not complaining! People, the passion is real. What really got me with the choreography is that the girls actually pulled off dancing to the EDM breakdown.
I personally dislike idols infusing K-Pop with EDM, but the dancing made me reconsider what the girls can bring when performing this song live. What the chorus lacks in lyrics was made up with powerful dance moves. Each swift pose taken with those neon gloves on really grabbed my attention and kept my eyes on the screen the whole time. It wouldn\'t be farfetched to say that this choreography is the fastest, most energy-filled choreography Girls\' Generation has ever done. Good luck to fans on this dance cover. You\'ll definitely break a sweat!
One word to describe this comeback would be power. The girls show who holds the power in this boy-chases-girl relationship and the music video proves just that. Get pumped for the live stages because this performance is going to heat things up in the audience. And hey. It\'s a fun song. If you don\'t like it, if they just didn\'t sell it for you this time around, still keep this one in your playlist. Give it a couple more go\'s like me and maybe it\'ll grow on us.
Well? Did Girls\' Generation meet your expectations with their music video? Leave your comments below!

I don\'t know if it\'s true but GG already release their Japanese PV for Catch Me If You Can. Here the video (from GirlsGenerationVevo channel):
his is what you call REVIEW although Joshua didn\'t go too far/ detail (about the element of the song/ MV/ Dance) when he wrote this review. I think with a couple effort he can write a good review.
Anyway I must say that I didn\'t agree with his opinion about "you all will like the song when you listen a couple times". I already watch the MV and listen the audio (mp3) like 20 times but yet can feel it. I like it / feel it isn\'t as bad as other ppl say when I watch the MV more than when I listen to the audio. I think the dance save the song and I hope their Korean album title song is much better than this one; SM please give them a good song...
ps. The second song from this single is so good. I like it! "Girls\' Generation - Girls" You should listen it.
For me in all girls generation song i couldn\'t feel it from the first view but after two or three views i fall in love with it and this happens with this song too !
As a proud sone i really like it .. i agree that the EDM was a bit excessive but they are GG as the first time they using it they rrally did it perfectly ..and for the dance no need to talk about it , it talk about itself ❤ although it is just a Japanese single and I am so excited that i can\'t wait for their comeback.
During all these years GG represented the life of girls from a teenagers who looking forward to a new world full of dreams to a young girls in their early 20th who dreams about their perfect man and now a strong woman who proud of what they have had and did.. so if you want to call it pompous then it is their rights. ..
Not as a sone but as a girl i am really proud of GG and girls need to be strong like them to make all their dreams come true ♥
I really wanted to punch the faces of those HATERS/TROLLS here in this site.
when females get confident in what they believe, they are seen as "pompous"?
Relax sones, this is not their Korean comeback. It\'s for Japanese fans but since they love us, they gave us the Korean Version. Besides, their songs in Japan greatly differ in quality and concepts right? So chill and relax ;)
So I think it\'s kinda useless giving a chance to him for giving a review for this song.
People just don\'t get that this is a Japanese release, it\'s not their comeback. The sound sounds weird for Korean market but maybe it fits the Japanese one. They released this single in Korea as a gift to fans but they are not going to perform it on tv shows. I liked the song after a few listens and absolutely love the music video. I like this style very much.
I totally agree with you, even my mom who has never complimented any kpop idols, this time, complimented SNSD
In my opinion, the only K-pop song that works with EDM is T-ara\'s Sugar Free. I\'m a Sone btw.
I don\'t know. Their dance is really good, as expected from SNSD. Music also good! But lyrics?? Emmm... Maybe CMIUC can be a good song for workout but not to listen to its lyrics.
I was looking forward to be a SONE starting this year, but this song just blew it out. Maybe I should continue being typical KPOPper and listen to all SNSD songs without biasing any of them.
The YAY : Soo, Hyo, Yoo & Yuri have a lot of lines (FINALLY!) and the dance was pretty intense and powerful.
The NAY : I hate the song. I\'m sorry. It\'s just messy.
"My major initial problem with the song was that the girls had to go down a route I had hoped to never see: EDM."
"I personally dislike idols infusing K-Pop with EDM,"
I\'m blaming this for the low score he gave. This is personal preference and NOT a review. EDM is just what it says; "dance music". That\'s what it\'s about. That\'s ALL it\'s about. To try and rate this the same way as your run-of-the-mill generic KPop is a disservice not only to the artist, but the fans as well.
They kilt this! He got that part right. The power, the passion, the sheer, raw sexiness that this song demanded of the performer was there and then some.
I REALLY wish people would get over this. This music is about dance, period. If you have other expectations, there are other genres for you to listen to but this is all about the thump, the beat, the adrenaline, the dancing. That\'s it. I really is THAT simple.
This music also lends itself to a group with as many members as SNSD. Sooyoung, Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Yoona FINALLY got to shine as something other than the dance line. That alone was enough for me to love this.
I seem to be among the minority that actually likes EDM. I like it because I take it for what it is, dance music.
This is the song that you listen to when you want your brain to shut up so that you don\'t worry about anything. This is the music that you go crazy to with no guilt. This isn\'t music you get to be a musical snob with. So, if you don\'t like it, guess why? ;)
Trying to be too hip..a really disappointed sone here..and before I get a buncha hate by the sm stans..be real with yourself..this joint was terrible..and I\'ve been a sone since itnw
Same here. I don\'t know if it\'s SM or what, but they are just getting lazier with each release. They aren\'t even trying anymore. It\'s like they take Sones for granted and that anything with SNSD is gold regardless of whether or not it sounds good. You wait for months and get this piece of crap? It\'s borderline insulting
@sone89 I only liked the parts in the second half with the ad-libs and layering, but I\'d only listen to the song for that and that\'s it. This song was released by the Japanese company and produced by them, Sm is partnering with the Japanese company to put this out. That is also why the Japanese version isn\'t allowed in some areas. I think the Japanese version sounds much better and comfortable to listen to (well it is originally a japanese song....). Still love the girls I hope their korean comeback has an amazing dance like this or better and a much better appealing song. ^^
SNSD Japanese comeback are always the Best!!! Much more better than their Korea comeback...lolx!! Yeah !! EDM Rockz!!
T-Ara for me really suits EDM. Just saying. I love Hyoyeon forever though
It sort of reminded of the "catch me if you wanna" part in tvxq song. haha but only a bit.
I think they suit more with gee and genie more than this type
They did when they were little girls. They\'re grown women now. I guess you aren\'t up to the chase. Don\'t worry though, there are more than enough of us willing to try and catch them ;)
irony that akp is snsd bias but they give overall 6.8???
the last time recall ppl said AKP is more YG bias. changed already?
akp never was yg bias.Did you see how many yg article here so often??
@noobstuff and they don\'t use YG with misleading titles and fan wars starter articles. Their "sm" thing is make money for them.
sones said that this is japan song so it will be no good.So that means every snsd japan songs are bad.that means japanese fans don\'t deserved good songs while Korean and international deserved good songs.
don\'t try to find excuse about it.I know many sones want everyone to praise about this song no matter what.
just like IGAB and MR mr,you need to listen to it 100x and keep saying the song is awseome.
I thin it\'s a bullshit to say it\'s not a korean comeback as an excuse. Song is amazin and so much people love it, it\'s just not a korean market music. People listen it with judges because it\'s snsd. This is completely different snsd style. They sing the song invudialy. Everything is different and people find it weird. You may like it, or don\'t it doesn\'t make this song bad because not. To be able to say a song "bad" you have to give a lroper musical critics. No need to act like superior complexed people. People can love it and if it\'s a problem for people, there must a different problem with them.
Well it depends on who\'s listening. For EDM lovers, they love it. But we, as like usual KPOP songs is we need to absorbed the song. When I first watch it honestly I didn\'t like it. When you play it again and again, I going to love it. Like what Sunny said, "You need to keep listening to it for it to grown on your ears. As you need to listen to it more before you come to a judgment about it, I put on Girls\' Generation\'s \'Catch Me If You Can.\'"
