Is it the way that you must read one before another, or is it unimportant which order you read the books in?

I borrowed the books from the library so I read whatever books they happened to have. I read gossip girl way out of order and still understood what was going on

i read the 2nd book first then started from the beginning reading them in order
i got them as they were released (dedicated fan me lol)
and it made sense that way
