Wasn't Arachne turned because she was boasting about her weaving skills? I thought Medusa was turned because she was raped by Poseidon in one of Athena's temples. (Some interpretations see the transformation as a gift from Athena, not a curse, because it enables Medusa to protect herself.)

True it's the wrong myth. Medusa was one of three sisters, Stheino and Euryale being other two, she was the only mortal one. Medusa made love with Poseidon in one of Athene's temples. Outraged by this she turned Medusa in to a monster and her gaze could turn men and gods to stone.
When Perseus cut her head off Athene fastened the head to her aegis (a magical goat-skin bag but some say that Athene's was made from Medusa's skin) and from Medusa's dead body sprang Poseidon's children Chrysaor and Pegasus.
