How is Mako Mermaids a Spin Off Series to H20 just add water?

Okay so how is mako mermaids a spin off series to h20 just add water Iam very confused I get that it has to do with Mermaids and takes place at mako island but mako mermaids does not even have the same characters. Can someone please help here.
