He got his orders that his obligation was fulfilled and he was being sent home. His chopper was shot down over the Sea of Japan; there were no survivors. The show's producers did this because there were lots of good people who didn't make it home from Korea, or Vietnam (or any other war we've fought), and they needed to remind the viewers that while there was a lot of humor in the series, it was still about something horrible and horrific.
