Neville was the perfect one to do it. He could have been the Chosen One if Voldemort had targeted him instead of Harry. He was a true Gryffindor. There's no way that Malfoy could've done it, the sword wouldn't have presented itself to him.

Also, it couldn't have been Hermione, unless you also gave Ron a second Horcrux to destroy. The whole idea is that Ron and Hermione are equal.
