They had a rivalry and it's implied Snape gave as good as he got and even created the spell used against him. 2 - The entire point of Snape's worst memory wasn't that he was tormented by big bad James, but that he fucked up his friendship with Lily by calling her a mudblood. It just so happened it occurred on a day where James had the upper hand.
