Doing inversions in yoga, namely down-dog, the charm on my mkufu dances with gravity, falling to rest perfectly over my lips. I find it ironic and terribly cute because the amulet reads “Protect Her Voice.” I kiss it lightly without drawing attention to myself, smiling into its smooth, cold surface knowing my breath is fogging it up a little.

I started wearing the Protection Amulet kwa Leah In Leaucadia just before my girlfriend went in for surgery on her vocal chords, prompting a week of silence for her, as well as months of therapy...

One time I threw-up Honey-Nut Cheerios while reclined in the dentist’s chair. I assume I was aliyopewa too much Nitrous oxide after eating apparently too many “parts of a balanced breakfast.” Surprisingly, the cheery Oh’s regurgitated as if I hadn’t ever chewed them up. They came forth from my dizzy carcass onto my t-shirt spelling out “Ooooh” like alphabet soup. Without missing a beat, the hygienist came in and said, “Mmm, Smells like Honey & Nuts.” True story. I bet they saved the footage on the surveillance camera....

You can only polish a turd for so long before it starts to fall apart. So it goes with album making. Thriller was made in just 8 weeks while pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, though rehearsed and performed live before it was ever recorded, was made in just 2 sessions. I am not currently working on Chinese Democracy, but I have been sculpting this turd for almost a mwaka now and it’s doesn’t even remotely resemble a Snickers Bar. My point: It’s still not ready for consumption.

Of course,...

"Only Human"

A squirrel in the mti is he watching me
Does he give a damn?
Does he care who I am?
I'm just a man, is that all I am
Are my manners misinterpreted words au only human?
I'm human

Murderous crow, hujambo what wewe know
What wewe kusoma about, what wewe hold in your toes
Is that a twig, are wewe a njiwa of peace
A black njiwa undercover, with another puzzle piece
Are wewe a riddle to solve all along?
Or am I over thinking thoughts of human after all

Only human
Made of flesh, made of sand, made of human
The planet's talking about a revolution
The natural laws ain't got no constitution
They've got a right to...

"Details In The Fabric"
(feat. James Morrison)

Calm down
Deep breaths
And get yourself dressed instead
Of running around
And pulling all your threads saying
Breaking yourself up

If it's a broken part, replace it
But, if it's a broken arm then brace it
If it's a broken moyo then face it

And hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way
Hold your own
Know your own name
And go your own way

And everything will be fine
Everything will be fine
Mmmhmm

Hang on
Help is on the way
Stay strong
I'm doing everything

Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way
Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way

And everything,...

"Please Don't Tell Her"

I hear she's kicking punda across the board and rock two hundred thousand higher scorer
Just in time to save the world of being taken over
She's a warrior
I couldn't play again because the game it never end it never even landed on the can
And never let me in to spend my quarter
There's no upendo for me no more

Say it isn't so
How she easily come, and she easy go
Please don't tell her that I've been meaning to miss her
Because I don't

She was the girl with the broadest shoulders
But she would die before I crawled over them
She is taller than I am
She knew I wouldn't mind the view there...

"Wordplay"

I've been all around the world
I've been a new sensation
But it doesn't really matter
In this generation
The sophomore slump is an uphill battle
And someone alisema that ain't my scene
'Cause they need a new song
Like a new religion
Music for the television
I can't do the long division
Someone do the math
For the record label puts me on the shelf up in the freezer
Got to find another way to live the life of leisure
So I drop my top
Mix and I mingle
Is everybody ready for the single and it goes...

[Chorus]
Ha La La La La
Now listen closer to the verse I lay
(Ha La La La La)
It's all about the wordplay

"Dream Life Of Rand McNally"

Who is he, Mr. Rand McNally? Who , who is he?
Well, I had I dream that mystery was me, now who else could I be?

'Cause I dreamed I went to England and met the Spice girls there for tea
They Lost one zaidi they're down from four to my favourite number of three
But they're still quite spicy as the machungwa, chungwa flavour
And oh so nice to do me the favour and lick my icing under the meza, jedwali now
But I gotta leave town Mr. Nally,
Just as scary spice was about to go down on me
And don't ask how Mr. Nally and give up the towel Mr. Nally and run.

I dreamed I went to Singapore got bored and...

"Unfold"

Hands in Line
Arms close to my side
I'm fighting tides
Of an ocean's undertow
And I figure that I might not make it
I'm taking empty but seldom speaking
And the words retreat
Yeah, they breath in histories
Still at ease
And the story's untold
And my arms unfold

My hands are high
And I'm holding on, I'm holding out
And I figure that I
Figure that I just might make it
And I'm waking empty but seldom sleeping
And the words repeat breathing histories
Into stories untold but I unfold

See now quality is what wewe see now
In the corner of your eye
And don't be surprised
If wewe hear the bells ring
As they form from...

"1000 Things"

I'm overjoyed and over loved and feeling lucky
Like a little boy who's hiding under covers
And looking to discover any way to play the part inside his darkened cave
Well the meaning of life it starts at the nightlight
Close your eyes and hope to see mine

Well I've seen a thousand things in one place
But I stopped my counting when I saw your face
Erasing memory I feel as though I've never seen a face before
Until I saw your eyes smiling back at me thru my tears
I've been counting all these years
Now suddenly the thousand things I've seen were
Nothing zaidi than dreams of wewe and me

wewe and me quietly at a stand still
Fortunately wewe will kiss me and I'll kiss wewe back
Fact of the matter of is that I don't know what the latter is
That I always wanted to kiss wewe but
I always wanted to run from you
Because I always wanted to miss wewe
And that I've always wanted to come for you

So... how do wewe do?

"Boy's Gone"

The boy's gone. The boy's gone home.

What will happen to a face in the crowd when it finally gets too crowded.
And will happen to the origins of sound after all the sounds have sounded
Well I hope I never have to see that siku but kwa god I know it's headed our way
So I better be happy now that the boy's going home. The boy's gone home.

And what becomes of a siku for those who rage against it
And who will sum op the phrase for all left standing around in it

Well I suppose we'll all make our judgement call
We'll walk it alone, stand up tall, then march to the fall
So we better be happy now...

You. wewe were a friend. wewe were a friend of mine I let wewe spend the night
You see it was my fault. Of course it was mine.
I'm too hard at work. Have wewe ever heard of anything so absurd ever in your life.
I'm sorry for wasting your time.

See who am I to say this situation isn't great? When it's my job to make the most of it
Of course I didn't know that it would happen to me. Not that easy.

Hey what's that wewe say? You're not blaming me for anything well that's great
But I don't break that easy. Does it fade away?
So that's why I'm, I'm apologizing now for telling wewe I thought that...

"Who Needs Shelter"

Good-day sunlight
I'd like to say how truly bright wewe are
wewe don't know me but I know you
You're my inayopendelewa star
Follow wewe I will so lets get moving

Who needs shelter when the mornings coming?
Absolutely there's no one
Who needs shelter from the sun?
Not me, no. not anyone.

kwa your clock the cock rooster crows
Then off to work where everybody goes
Slow, But eventually they get there
Picking up the siku shift back where all left off
Confined and pecking at relationships
wewe know it's only a worthless piece of shit

Who needs shelter when the mornings coming?
Absolutely there's no one
Who needs shelter from the sun?
Not me, no. not anyone.

I'd sleep it all away but the sun wont let me
I'd miss those lovely days of summer

Good-day sunlight
I'd like to say how truly bright wewe are
wewe don't know me but I know you
You're my favorite.

"You And I Both"

Was it wewe who spoke the words that things would happen but not to me
Oh things are gonna happen naturally
Oh taking your advice I'm looking on the bright side
And balancing the whole thing
But often times those words get Tangled up in lines
And the bright lights turn to night
Until the dawn it brings
Another siku to sing about the magic that was wewe and me

Cause wewe and I both loved
What wewe and I spoke of
And others just read of
Others only read of the love, the upendo that I love.

See I'm all about them words
Over numbers, unencumbered numbered words
Hundreds of pages, pages, pages for words...

A Guide to Answering the Unanswerable, Making Sense of the Nonsensical, and Solving the Unsolvable

How big is your vocabulary?
How heavy is your house?
Do the dead outnumber the living?
What are the best words to use
in a personal ad?

We humans are a curious species, prone to think, ruminate, reflect, cogitate, mull over, and philosophize. We long to explain away the world around us, to answer all those seeming unanswerables. Why are we here? Is there a God? Is there life after death? And, above all, how many houseflies does it take to pull a car?

A confirmed and...

Messing with the flavor oh the flavor that wewe savor
Saving me for last but wewe better not eat me at all
Living in a fast chakula bag making Marafiki with the ketchup and salt
People say that I'm crazy for not moving on to better things
Instead I'm sitting around trash talking with the kitunguu rings
But it's much too soon to leave this easy life
Pass me the spoon. Pass the analytical knife

Now you're about to get cut up au get cut down
It's all about the wordplay all about the sound in the tone of my voice
You gotta let me make my...
