Chapter One
It's a cold, dark, rainy night. I am huddled in the corner of a alley, fighting against what my body thinks it wants, needs. It's only been two days since I fed last, but the cry of people in the streets makes my thirst burn, makes me want to leave my hiding spot and go feed. I can not let that happen, not yet.
For those of wewe who are wondering, my name is Jasper Whitlock and I'm a vampire...it's strange to think that even to myself. I was born April 21st, 1863, and died in 1883...if that's what wewe want to call it. I was 20 years old, a Major in the Confederate army, during the Civil War. I have always been very charismatic, and I think that's what made me rise through the ranks so fast. I was the youngest Major in history, and a lot of soldiers resented me for it..and it might sound strange but I could almost feel their hate, their disdain towards me...and I enjoyed it. I liked that they all didn't like me, the military wasn't about liking everyone.
I was out riding along the perimeters, bringing in families from the outskirts of town when I came across them. There were three of them, all of them covered with dresses that looked too well made to be a farm child. They were all small, almost child sized, it made me wonder where their families were, why they were walking alone.
Their hair was all covered kwa hanker chiefs, I couldn't see any of their faces until I rode up inayofuata to them. They were all breathtakingly beautiful. Their skin that of the porcelain, tiled dolls that the daughters of the Colonel have. Their smiles were innocent, nothing about them betrayed what they truly were...predators.
The smallest of them smiled up at me, and being a gentleman I smiled down and tilted my hat to the side. "Good morning ladies." I said.
They all smiled up at me, the tallest of the three nodding at me...the others smiled as the tall one walked closer.
"Hello. My sister believes that she dropped her doll just up the road. It is very special to her, and we were wondering if wewe would be willing to help us look. We would go back alone, but are worried with the talk of fighting just outside town." She said, her voice that of a choir.
I shook my head, trying to get the ringing out of my ears. "I would be honored miss." I alisema as I jumped off my horse and tied him to a tree.
We began walking down the path, the girls all looking around for the Lost doll, and that is the last thing I remember, until I woke. The fear and confusion was so overwhelming that I couldn't control myself..I screamed and begged for someone to help me, to give me majibu and no one came..I thought that no one would ever come.
A week au so later I was proven wrong. The three girls that I had seen on the road walked into the room. They explained to me what they were, and why they chose me. It seems that they were out scouting for new 'members', and the smallest, Maria had taken a liking to me.
She alisema that she wanted me to teach them, to help them become the strongest coven in the south.
I remember the fear, the hatred. I had never spoken harshly to a woman before, but I called her unforgivable things. I told them that I didn't understand, why me? What had I done wrong.
"You've done nothing wrong, young one. Quite the opposite. I recognized that wewe are a leader, a fighter..and that is exactly what we were looking for that night on the road." One of them said.
She stepped mbele and I saw her black hair, it was mid-shoulder length and looked like raw silk. She was not a child at all, she was a small woman. She smiled at me as she realized I was watching her.
I cowered away from her as I begged them to kill me, to leave me, to just go...but they alisema that they were going to help as they left...walking up the stairs. A few dakika later a young woman was brought down the stairs. Her blond hair was pulled back, she was blindfolded and so scared that every inch of my body was shaking from her emotions. I wanted to help this girl, to get her out, to get her back to her nyumbani where her family must be worried...but when I got close...my mind went blank.
I couldn't think of anything, all I could see was the beat of her blood below her skin. The beat was so loud that I swore I could hear it in my head, I didn't understand but the inayofuata thing I knew I had the girl on the ground. Her head resting in my hands, her neck at a strange angle. I knew she was dead and my mouth went to her neck, the warm blood flowing down my throat, filling me up...calming the hunger that I hadn't realized until I started drinking. I drank until
she was drained, she was nothing zaidi then a shell.
I hung my head, knowing that I had killed a person..someones daughter. I felt such remorse, such sadness but at the same time I felt so much better...stronger.
I looked up and saw Maria sitting on the steps, a look of approval on her face. "Why Major, I knew wewe would be a perfect fit for our family." She alisema as she walked down the stairs. "You will be so useful to me, I need wewe to be a leader. I will take care of you...if wewe are interested."
I nodded, afraid to use my voice..not trusting it at this point.
"Good. I will teach wewe myself. We will be the strongest coven, no one will be better than me." She alisema as she stood up and walked up the stairs, closing the door behind her...leaving me in the dark...again.
Maria did teach me, she taught me how to kill and fight..not as I fought before but fight as a vampire. She taught me how to use my new speed, how to be stronger than anyone, and how to handle the new 'people' that she brought in.
She alisema that this would be my job, I would be the trainer. I would help the new ones adjust and teach them the ways, that I would be a leader. It would be my job to keep them in line, to be the enforcer if need be..I had no reason to doubt her, to sekunde guess her...so I agreed.
Every siku from then on, one of the three would bring me someone new to feed off of. The sadness and guilt slowly started to go away, to lessen. I still felt for their families, knowing that no one would find them...which in turn made me think about my family.
What were they thinking now, I never was good at keeping in touch..but I would send a letter every few weeks. They would notice that I wasn't uandishi anymore. What would my military family think? I was the leader of a small regiment, I was the one that they looked to for guidance...who would take my place?
I didn't have much time to think these things, because the doors opened and Nelly..one of the 'sisters' brought in a small unconscious woman.
"This is your first recruit." She alisema as she set the woman at my feet. "Take care of her, train her...teach her."
I nodded slowly as I looked down at the woman at my feet. She had two small puncture wounds on her wrists, where she was bitten, and venom dried shiny against her mouth. Her body twitched as the venom spread through her body..changing what was human into what was vampire.
