im not sure............but i think.......kakashi and his father white fang have big resemblance............and when ever kakashi see's his face he remember his father............well his father was known as a traitor among the leaf right...for abandoning the mission........he abandon his mission for the safety of his comrades..........and it was a shock to kakashi himself when he saw his father committed suicide........soooo to forget the pain he wrap, upangaji pamoja himself ...his feelings under that mask..........and sworn to protect the leaf...... ..

It's because Kishimoto wanted a masked character, and after a while he regretted it since now he doesn't know how to reveal Kakashi's face due to the high hopes from fans. In short it's just because Kishimoto doesn't know how to draw Kakashi's face.
Hmm... well, Ayame, the girl working in the ramen, mashua shop, saw what was under his mask and her eyes turned into hearts. Perhaps he hides his face so he doesn't attract too much attention, when walking round the Leaf Village. :P

for me, he never remove his mask because if he remove it, he will remember his Father and what his Father did to Sasori's Parents? au someone (sorry not sure) and he will make him guilty about it
