In the days just before his death, Michael Jackson was working harder than he ever had in hopes of staging “the greatest onyesha on Earth” according to our latest cover story.

Claire Hoffman retraced the pop icon’s final moments for “The Last Days of Michael Jackson” in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, and found that Jackson was well aware of how the public came to perceive him in hivi karibuni years and that he had fully dedicated himself to a comeback tour that he hoped would erase that perception.

“He wanted people to see his work and not just talk about his lifestyle,” AEG CEO Randy Phillips tells Hoffman in her cover story.

He was also eager to finally clean up his finances and settle down in Las Vegas. “He was ready to stop living like a vagabond and settle down and earn money again,” Phillips tells Rolling Stone.

And those who were inside his final rehearsals say that the onyesha he was prepared to mount may have actually succeeded on all fronts.

“He was so brilliant on stage,” tour director Kenny Ortega tells Hoffman. “I had goose, bata bukini bumps.”

“I turned to somebody and said, ‘This is amazing,’” adds Ken Ehrlich, the longtime Grammy Awards producer who sat in on rehearsals. “For so many years I have watched Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake and Usher and the Backstreet Boys and En Vogue all imitate Michael Jackson — and now here we were this many years later, and he was going to do it again. I got chills, literally. The hairs on the back of my neck were raised. Those are the moments wewe hope for.”

Claire Hoffman’s “The Last Days of Michael Jackson” can be found in Issue 1084, on newsstands now, and wewe can get the story behind her cover story in our exclusive video.

As I was walking, my mouth was wide open. I couldn't believe what I heard. " Summer? Snap out of it!" My friend Denise said, snapping her fingers in my face.

" Wait, huh?" I asked, shaking my head. Had I heard right? Denise cleared her throat. " Summer, it'll be okay, we'll find your father somehow."

Somehow. That word pricked at my skin like a knife. What if I DON'T FIND MY DAD? He could be anymore, possibly in trouble, longing to be at nyumbani with his family.

My two other best friends, Kim and Mickey were walking with me. " Summer, your dad is a Platinum Superstar, how could he disappear like...

Michael
Michael lets me in and grabs my suitcase. " I'm so glad wewe could make it."
Seeing all the pictures made me remember how lucky I was to be his best friend.
Mrs. Jackson and LaToya come in. " Fancy! We didn't know wewe were here!"
I smiled. " Hello Mrs. Jackson, LaToya." LaToya smiles and gives me a big hug like her little brother. " I haven't seen wewe in so long, this little dude's been talking about wewe all the time!" She alisema pointing to Michael, who's cheeks were red with embarrassment.

Mrs. Jackson smirked at LaToya. " Now, now. Stop teasing your brother." She said. She turned to me and...

wewe were there, before we came
wewe took the hurt, wewe took the shame
They built the walls to block your way
wewe beat them down, wewe won the siku

It wasn't right, it wasn't fair
wewe taught them all, wewe made them care
Yes wewe were there and thanks to wewe
There's now a door, we all walk through

And we are here, for all to see
To be the best that we can be
Yes I am here...
'Cause wewe were there
