He had already lost his son because of his power obsession; because he had changed. All he had was knowing that Milah had loved him, and that she was taken. That at one point, even if she was angry all the time and wasn't exactly the ideal mother or wife, someone has really loved him and not wanted him so much different (until he returned from the war). He knew that no one could love him now, not even his own son, but he knew that someone had once, when he was but a lame spinner and a coward. She ripped that away from him. She made it clear that no matter how he changed or what he did, no one could ever love him. Not even his own wife. She is the reason he can never let anyone in. She is the reason he has himself believing Bae couldn't love him and Belle couldn't love him.
