Pretty Little Liars S5.05 Review – ‘Run, Ali, Run
From blowing up houses and video burials to the family break-ups and who’s looking back at you in the mirror, there’s nowhere for the Liars to hide in ‘Run, Ali, Run.’ Who will keep their masks on the longest, ‘A’ or the girls? We’re no closer to any answers.
Or he. Whomever ‘A’ really is, is back, and Lord they’ve been missed. Though it took a house blowing up to convince the Liars, they (finally) realize that Shana wasn’t ‘A.’ Or at least was not the only ‘A.’ Took you bitches long enough.
Deep down, I think they missed the sometimes ominous, always corny texts (I did).
After ‘A’ sends Ali the video of her mother’s backyard burial, the Liars realize they have no idea who ‘A’ can even be anymore, though giggles to Aria thinking that maybe it’s Spencer’s dad! It’s like Aria and Emily feel the need to battle for weakest link ever week. Emily’s putting her money on Melissa and I still don’t think anyone named Hastings would do a murder so sloppy.
The Liars want to work with Ezra to find Bethany’s killer and uncover ‘A’ but Ali decides she needs out of Rosewood. All the Liars, except for Hanna, really want her to stay. Hanna wants Ali out so bad she’s offering up her own clothing (pre-image crisis) and cash.
Despite suggesting Ali leave with her dad to start over in a new town a few days before, Emily flips when she discovers Ali’s relocation plan and calls Hanna’s motives into question. Does she want Ali out of town or does she just want to go back to being the It Girl? Hanna doesn’t know and looks for Caleb to provide some answers. Since
, the only answers Caleb can find are at the bottom of a bottle, but even he realizes that Alison makes Hanna feel badly about herself.
I see where this is going though. Remember how quickly Spencer’s addiction to speed went? As Caleb hands Hanna the flask, I see their anniversary being spent at AA.
Despite Hanna following him around like a lost puppy, Caleb wont commit to Rosewood (or trying to win Hanna back). He’s the only one who thinks he’s going anywhere. Travis and Hanna are done by the end of the hour and I wish I could feel surprised or even sad. Instead, I wish they hadn’t dragged it out till the end, we knew it was over when she told Ali it was “just Travis” at the door 10 minutes in.
‘A’, or one of her black hooded followers, shows up at Ali’s as she’s packing a few things and getting ready to blow town. Geesh, Ali’s been home like a week and she’s got 2 fake IDs at the ready and several hundred dollars cash. Was she really gonna let Hanna send her off with Hanna’s clothing and Mrs. Marin’s money? They’ve been having on-and-off financial troubles since season 1! That Ali, always the picture of selfishness.
‘A’ gets the jump on Ali and almost chokes the life out of her until Emily comes in and saves the day. For a second I thought Em was going to get the upper hand and unmask the assailant, but alas, it was not to be. ‘A’ makes a getaway, Emily spends the night watching Ali sleep and they later tell the Liars (well Spencer and Aria, Hanna’s still persona nongrata with Emily) they have no idea who attacked them. Emily has her suspicions though. It could be Lucas, Melissa or any of the other people Paige told her were on Team Mona. Melissa is tiny, Lucas is tall and lanky, and Emily can’t distinguish them from each other (let alone the other nameless people on Team Mona). Emily totally has a future with the Rosewood PD.
Poor Paige! She gives into Emily’s pleading and all she gets for her trouble is her girlfriend spending another night in bed with Ali and a dead rat in her locker. A rat, really? These two are known for hitting people with cars, blowing up houses and delivering messages with human teeth! Either ‘A’ and Mona are slipping or Paige is acting as a double agent. Hell, I kind of hope it was Paige who attacked them at the house.
Aria and Ezra. Ezra and Aria. These two just can’t stay away from each other. After what Aria refers to as a “slip” (twice), Spencer tries to bring a little sanity to the situation and remind Aria exactly what Ezra’s spent the past few years doing (mainly spying, stalking, lying, etc). Aria just can’t stop herself though and she’s right back at Ezra’s apartment, making eyes at him and looking for clues about Bethany (whom Ezra suddenly remembers from interviews he did with Radley staff). Ezra must have figured going through his files would be on Aria’s To Do List because he hides a picture of them together for her to uncover (you know he did it, no way was it a coincidence).
With the usual Liar luck on her side, Investigator Tanner shows up and Aria’s d to hide while Ezra answers some questions. For a second, I wondered why he had to cover up the picture of the two of them together when Tanner’s inside, but oh right, their relationship is illegal. Tanner is investigating Shana’s death and doesn’t believe in coincidences either, especially if they involve finding dead girls in the family theater of a shooting victim. For someone with a lot of money, Ezra has zero sense. He should lawyer up before talking to this one. Aria’s also way more concerned Ezra will get into trouble for lying to the police than she is about the trouble she’ll get into if they find out she killed Shana (or her guilt over that killing).
Before I can get to annoyed with this turn of events (wasn’t this story supposed to be about Aria the Liar, not Aria the Girlfriend), Ezra opens up the envelope left for him on his doorstep to reveal a drawing of Ali’s mother and a demon. Checking his stalker, I mean security camera, yeah those are still up, he realizes it was left by Eddie Lamb, the orderly who told Spencer he couldn’t talk about patients just like yesterday … literally it was yesterday
Spencer plays so many roles so well: girlfriend, student, best friend, amateur P.I., Liar. This week, she finds something she’s not particularly great at. No, not little sister (love you Spence, but multiple hookups with Melissa’s boyfriends lands you the worst title), marriage counselor. After an intense interview with her dad, she finds out that he and Melissa were at the lake talking, she takes Hastings family matters into her own hands, invites Mr. Hastings to meet them at a restaurant and convinces her mom to talk to him.
Despite some linger hand holding, the Hastings marriage can’t be saved. Spencer begs her mom to give Mr. Hastings another chance but Mrs. points out she has, too many of them. Mrs. Hastings is way too good for him, but even I forgot that for a minute and wanted them to try again.
Discarding her marriage counselor hat, Spencer dives back into the ‘A’ mystery. Why would Eddie refuse to answer any of her questions, but leave Ezra that picture? How did Bethany know Ali’s mom? Board members generally don’t hang out with patients. The demon isn’t good, but is it going to devour Mrs. DiLaurentis or just haunt her? Is it her second self? There are so many ways to interpret art! Since Spencer had been committed to Radley, she can’t go undercover and get answers to any of these questions. I have to wonder if maybe she should have been doing outpatient visits though. Sending Aria in? The only thing worse would have been sending Emily! They couldn’t wait a few weeks for Hanna and Caleb to need AA? I bet Radley has a meeting!
Ali tried to run, but ‘A’ has her right where she/he wants her. Note to self, ‘A’ thinks Rosewood is worse than death. Maybe A’s a 20-something who is sick of the Liars dating men in her/his age group instead of high school guys? Will we ever find out who ‘A’ is? Head over to the forum and let us know what you think!
