I have a love-hate thing for the film.
The movie has some betters over the book but not many, and not that significant ones so that to make me prefer it to the book..
Because it has too many characters and realtionships fucked up - and not all of them are even because of the story was changed so radically (basically due to limited minutes) but just because they were stupid enough to change them. (Like Jesse, no need to change her, and Marius's personality mixed with Magnus' - again no need to and they shouldn't have, as it violated the most vital relationship to the story - the Lestat & Marius one.)
And, they wasted half of the movie to something they invented all by themselves - the Lestat & Jesse "relationship".
The books' are more colourful and in-depth in storyline, character,s relatonships. And in the book the relationships that actually do really exsist in it, they work perfectly believably.
The film is entertaining and could stand on it's own feet if it wasn't advertised and credited as an adaptation of the books by Anne Rice, to which it doesn't pay much respect to.
I love and hate the film but I prefer the books without a question.
If you wish to know what and why I love about the film and think of it generally, there's too much to say.
You may read about it all on my Lestat&Marius fan site's certain section:

But i reckon the books my favorite because it can go into more detail, explain things better. Plus you have the previous 2 books so the characters are more like old friends. I guess also because i can see in my minds eye what i like so its more personal.
But the film is awesome too. I like the actors etc. But as a comparison to the book it doesnt really hold up.
I think what im trying to say is, the film is good, the book is good, but because the film is ment to be an adaptation of the book, it didnt really do it justice.
Plus I love the end of the book where Lestat goes to talk to David and Louis is calling him the devil;
"You are the perfect Devil, Lestat!" he was saying. "That's what you are! You are the Devil himself!"
"Yes I konw" .... "And I love to hear you say it, Louis. I need to hear you say it. I don't think anyone will ever say it quite like you do. Come on, say it again. I'm a perfect devil. Tell me how bad I am. It makes me feel so good!"
