Why was Ian sent to South Wales penal colony?

I can't remember if this was discussed in the vitabu yet, but can anyone recall? I know it was revealed Ian is a bastard born to a Viscount, and Bone's cousin. But why was he on that ship in the first place? What crime did he commit?
