Kayla turned and looked all around. There was no way in, no way out. She looked at Spencer, who looked right back. "Where are we?" she asked quietly.
"You were in an underground lake facility that does things to people," Stranger alisema simply. She didn't continue, didn't stop to investigate to ponder that thought. She just kept moving. But moving toward what?
They got to the end of the field, at the fence. There, Stranger picked up a pickle shaped rock and began to bash at the fence. Kayla couldn't help but notice that every time Stranger struck the fence sparked. A sudden ache in her arm, under the bandage caused her to look away and grab at it.
Apparently finished with her work at the fence, and having bashed a pretty sizeable hole in the barbed wire, Stranger looked at Kayla. She dropped the rock and leapt forward, pushing Spencer back as she did so.
"Did they inject you?" she asked, looking right into Kayla's eyes. "Did they put fluids into you?"
Frightened, Kayla nodded. Taking a deep breath, Stranger stood again. "We need to get wewe two through this fence," she alisema at last. "Don't touch the wire, and don't touch your brother." Stranger looked at Kayla. "He has a cut, and I'm sure wewe do somewhere. We don't want whatever got in wewe to get in him, okay?"
Kayla stared at Stranger, not quite sure what she meant. Was something wrong with her? Why couldn't she touch her brother? Something cold in Stranger's voice warned Kayla to listen, so she nodded.
"This is gonna be difficult," alisema Stranger. "But possible. Watch me, and do exactly what I do, okay?"
The two children glanced at each other, but bobbed their heads as one. They watched in silence as Stranger planted one foot carefully on one side of the fence, ducked as low as she could without touching her chest to the bottom of the hole. Then, arching her back, Stranger made it through. She leaned in through the whole. "Little one," she commanded of Spencer. "Come here." Holding his arms, Stranger helped Spencer through. inayofuata she did the same for Kayla.
Now, with all three on one side of the fence, Stranger pointed into the pine forest. "Go that way. Follow the marked trees to the road. Stay off the path! wewe could get caught there."
The children nodded, staring at Stranger for zaidi directions.
"Listen, children, this is very important. When wewe get to the road, make sure wewe turn left. Do not go right. wewe need to turn left, then follow the road. Find a small, marked van. That's the car wewe want to go to, okay? Did wewe hear me?"
The two nodded in unison. "Okay," she said. Then, turning back to the hole, she climbed through the way she had the first time. Looking up, she saw her audience. "What are wewe waiting for? Go!"
As the two turned and ran into the trees, they could hear Stranger grunt as she picked up the rock again. Kayla could swear the forest echoed with her breath as Stranger bashed the fence back into place.
