The Walking Dead S.5, Ep. 1 ‘No Sanctuary’: Spoiler-Free Review
MC deliver exactly what is needed in this impressive premier episode to
season 5. Here’s Billy’s spoiler free review.
The Walking Dead will return with episode one of season five on October 12th, but before then you can check out our completely spoiler-free review of
right here to get all your latest one the incredible AMC show. It feels like we have been stuck in that train cart along with Rick Grimes and the rest of the group since season four ended. Counting the days until we would see the light again, staring through the cracks in the walls to get a glimpse of what is to come…Trailers. Promos. Posters. And now that it is finely here, the doors flung open and the sunlight blinding us all with the magnificence of season five, does it live up to the ‘Walking Dead’ standard? You betcha.
series to start off straight after the finale episode of the previous series. This makes for a very interesting introduction and as you can imagine, sets up plenty of obstacles to be overcome in the early advancements of the new season’s story.
No Sanctuary is an action-packed, exhilarating return to the world of the dead, with Scott Gimple returning as show-runner and the writer of this episode. Gimple creates a wonderful introduction which by no means spoon feeds us what is to come in the future season. The episode if efficiently split into two parallel story lines with some limited over-lap towards the end, but throughout the episode the simplicity is still there. Rick Grimes went to pretty extraordinary lengths to stay alive and save Carl in the last season. This to me seems like the same core theme. What would you do to survive?
The issues raises by Rick and the cannibals of Terminus in the last season resonate throughout this new episode. The plot is driven powerfully through dialogue and further character development. The episode engages with an interesting idea though. How Rick sees his group. How the group sees itself. And how the rest of the world sees Rick’s group. These interesting observations are sharp and telling and set up some acute relationships and ideas for the future season.
Also, the wonderful Greg Nicotero directs this opening episode with an all-you-can-crush buffet of hearts, heads and zombies. Nobody can master the bloody-ballet of death like Nicotero, and this is quite remarkable when you consider he joined
as a humble special-effects-guy. He then become an executive producer. And he then became one of the show’s most precious directors with a magical eye for all things detailed and bloody. Nicotero’s direction is fluid and intimate. Nicotero’s screen is a canvas on which he uses blood-red paints to create a beautiful medley of chaos and character. There are horrifyingly beautiful moments and some mind-crushing special effects.  The season very much picks up with a sense of high tension, high stakes and a high body count.
In terms of characters, it is difficult to tell you without revealing any spoilers. Just watch out for the evolution of Melissa McBride’s Carol. She has evolved from being a jittery house-wife, to a broken soul, to a hardened heroine to a one-woman zombie crusher. Also, as expected, Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes is smoldering. Absolutely brooding. And sensationally unpredictable. The show has a few surprises in store for our heroes.
The violence is brutal. I mean, absolutely brutal. But it is meaningful and considered. It isn’t mindless. It is calculated and anticipated. The show continues to impress with an increased visual flair. Despite AMC’s tightly shut wallets, the show produces some incredible value of production and creativity. If this is an indication of what is to come in season five, we better all buckle up for one hell of a ride. As far as premier episodes go, this is up there with the best
The Walking Dead season 5 premieres on Sunday the 12th of October in the US and on Monday the 13th of October in the UK.
