4. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
“Hey,” Riley greeted. I waved at him. I sighed. My eyes got locked on his outfit.
He was wearing a black, with a hint of white stripes and a long sleeved polo and jeans.
My moyo pounded. I was sweating bullets. “So,” I shoved my hands in my back pockets. “What do wewe want to do?” I asked him. He was still composing himself.
Then he smiled at me. “How about I’ll ask wewe that question?” he didn’t sound serious. I did either, I don’t know what I had planned to do and it’s not happening right now. “What? Wait, I’m supposed to treat you, right?” I explained not serious. Oh my god, is this a date? Riley didn’t answer my question. He stood on a rock, making a help-me-I’m–going to-fall-down-action thing. “Plans changed. So, where’d wewe want to go?” he jumped in front of me. We both stared at TimeZone, a place where wewe can play any machine games. He raced me towards the place.
“Ha-ha. You’re so slow,” he teased. I managed to laugh. Inside TimeZone, we beat each others high score. He dared me to play basketball. Good thing I got 1, 349 points. I laughed at his score, it was minus-one. Hanging out with him was fun.
I enjoyed. inayofuata he pulled me to the Trivia Challenge game, zaidi on like a Who Wants to Be a Millionaire thing. Now, he was the one who laughed at me. I got a minus-three. Riley got an error when he swiped his card to the slot. “I’ll reload it. Wait for me,” he went to the counter. I sat on a high stool. I stared at him.
What’s he trying to prove? I giggled a bit. He went back to me to play some zaidi games. We went to the prize counter to claim our prize. Riley picked a huge Hello Kitty stuffed toy and gave it to me then I picked him a keychain. He liked it.
I giggled in my mind and smiled.
After everything we went to grab a drink, I was the one who paid.
We laughed and talked.
After that we went to his car. “Okay, bye,” I waved. He was puzzled like, he was missing something. “Don’t wewe have a car?” he asked.
I told him that Norah doesn’t allow me to use my scooter at night. “I rode a taxi, to get here,” I added. “I’ll drop wewe off,” he suggested now serious.
He gave me a maybe-you’ll-get-hold up-and-be-kidnapped look. “That’s fine, I can find a taxi myself,” my voice certain. “No. It’s almost midnight. wewe can’t find a taxi this time. wewe told me that Norah alisema be nyumbani kwa that midnight, right?” he was now convincing me. I bet he’s right. Taxis are so slow at this time.
“I guess you’re right,” I hopped at the front seat.
Riley’s Honda reached my house. “I had fun,” I admitted. “Thanks.”
He placed his hand on the wheel. “Sure, I had fun too,” his voice clear.
His face looks like he’s expecting a kiss. Not now, I told myself. But suddenly, he changed the look on his face.
I smiled at him and opened the door letting Hello Kitty out first. He honked once then droved away. I turned the front door knob and I saw the curtain rustled.
“Who was that last night? Speak up, Mariah,” Aeyla teased. She leaned at the table. I didn’t answer her right away. I was busy chopping onions and kengele peppers. I gave her a smile. Aeyla tapped her fingers, looking bored. “Oh, I see,” she observed. “Is it a boyfriend? Hmm,” she wondered. I was buzzed kwa the word boyfriend. “No, he’s just a friend,” my voice honest. “No boyfriends,” I added.
She handed herself a mixing bowl, mixing salsa. I poured nyanya sauce into the pot. “Okay,” I can hear the edge of her voice. I felt something liquid slid down my forehead. I wiped it using the apron I’m wearing. Felt a little nervous.
I promise wewe guys, Riley is not my boyfriend. “Then if he’s a friend, who is he?”
“He does suppose to have a name, “I heard her added and it wasn’t a question.
I sighed. Noodles, I mouthed. I forgot the noodles. Below the jikoni counter, I pulled out another pot. The room was silent. All I can hear is the sprinkles of water outside the lawn and the sound of the garlic mkate heating.
“Nice phone,” she held it. “You didn’t tell me wewe revived your old one, when was it?” the camera switched on. “Kinda changed it last month, I like the color,” I alisema cooly. My weight shifted towards the dining room to set the table. Aeyla nodded.
Ring! Ring! Ring! My phone rang. “Who’s this, Rah-ai-lee?” she pronounced each word. “Oh. I get it. Riley! Oh my God, you’re dating Riley Cruz?” she exploded with laughter. I ran to her to get my phone. “Give it!” I reached my hand for the phone. “Come and get it first,” she sang and danced around the kitchen. I chased after her.
“Should I answer it?” she looked at the screen then accelerated her speed.
I was a bit irritated but I laughed too. “Aeyla, don’t answer it,” I warned her.
“Why should I?” Aeyla asked.
“Give it to me,” my voice shouting. We chased each other downstairs to upstairs to downstairs again and to upstairs. “Fine,” she surrendered my phone. “Jeez, Aeyla,” was all said. “Hello?” I managed to keep my voice calm and not heavy.
Aeyla went downstairs. I listened carefully to his voice. “Cooking,” from the getting tired running around, I sat on the steps. “With Aeyla,” I added.
“Oh, that’s cool,” I nodded.
We talked for five minutes. Suddenly I smelled smoke coming from downstairs.
The oven, I went to my feet. “Mariah! Get down here,” Aeyla shouted.
I don’t want our conversation to end but I had to. “I gotta run, talk to wewe later,” I pressed the red button.
Smelling smoke was not a great idea. The smell made me nausea. I hurriedly went downstairs. “I got it,” she alisema holding the tray and placed it on the table. “Go get the spaghetti, maybe it will be inayofuata to burn,” she commanded.
I nodded. “Is Sean coming over?” I sighed.
“He’s already outside. Let him in, I got to change,” Aeyla went upstairs.
Quickly as I can I placed the sauce, spaghetti, tambi noodles, and the garlic mkate on the table. I didn’t jiunge the cookies.
“Hey, she will be down in a minute,” I greeted. Sean entered the room.
I hung my apron behind the jikoni door. He sniffed the room.
“I know, the kuki, vidakuzi were burned,” I seemed have noticed his expression.
“Okay,” he sat on the couch. The front door opened, it was Norah. Her curious expression made me jump. “What happened here, Mariah?”
I was about to speak but Sean went on before me. “The kuki, vidakuzi burned,” he added a smile then I saw his teeth sparked.
“Oh, I see,” Norah nodded. I poured juisi on every glass placed on the table.
I heard footsteps running towards the table. “Hey Sean,” she pecked him on the lips. I looked away. “Okay, let’s eat.”
Only a few days left and I’m off to Aunt Lourdes’ house for the summer.
Aeyla was supposed to get invited too but she refused the offer. So she stayed nyumbani with Norah. I was obviously nervous that she saw who called me the other day. I hope she doesn’t bring up that conversation with me au with anyone else.
Like I alisema Riley is not my boyfriend. I just had a slight crush with him.
Okay, enough about Riley. I have to pack my stuff. But before that I went to turn on the music.
On the juu of my cabinet I reached for two bags. I just hoped my stuff would fit inside. While working I danced around the room and joined the chorus.
After my dance number, someone buzzed me on IM.
It was Sierra. I quickly placed my laptop with me on the bed.
SierraMichael18: Mariah!
MariahAngeles19: Sierra! Omg. How was the flight?
SierraMichael18: It was good. Sorry I didn’t call right away.
MariahAngeles19: It’s okay. At least I’m here talking to wewe on IM.
SierraMichael18: I know right? Ha ha ha. Miss ya, best friend! :D
MariahAngeles19: I miss u more. How was NY?

MariahAngeles19: Gross. That must be really irritating.
SierraMichael18: It is, though. And I hate it.
Okay. I don’t want to talk about him anymore. She added.
MariahAngeles19: Sure. How’s your dad?
SierraMichael18: He’s working on a really good project on buildings. I liked the way he sketch the floors.
MariahAngeles19: Wow. Tell him I alisema goodluck, ‘kay? :D
SierraMichael18: Sure thing, hujambo I heard that wewe and Riley Cruz are dating. Omg! Is it true? Spill the details.
I stopped typing. How did she know? I smiled.
MariahAngeles19: Honestly, we aren’t dating. We just went out, that’s all.
SierraMichael18: Really, what happened? :-O
MariahAngeles19: We played TimeZone. I treated him, then he did the same back.
SierraMichael18: wewe guys are so sweet. Let me guess, did he gave wewe a Hello Kitty stuffed toy like in movies?
Augh!
MariahAngeles19: You’re such a movie addict. :D
SierraMichael18: I know right? Lol
MariahAngeles19: Sierra, I have to go right now. I sighed.
SierraMichael18: What? We were just starting a conversation.
MariahAngeles19: It’s past midnight already and Norah will be mad if she found out I’m still awake. Don’t worry we’ll talk another time.
SierraMichael18: Right, wewe know Norah when she gets mad. Yeah wewe told me about her making rules now.
I understand. She added.
MariahAngeles19: Thanks. upendo ya, goodnight! :D
SierraMichael18: upendo u too! Nighty-night. :D
