Comic book fans are not exactly known for their even-handed response to things. It’s like a microcosm of the larger approach to consuming popular culture, the urge to claim that everything is either the Best or the Absolute Worst, with no middle ground in between. Sure does put the pressure on the studios to deliver.
Which is probably why they overcompensate by teasing as much info about a film as possible before it gets released. The Avengers was on the table as early as the first Iron Man. Warner Bros released the first Batman V Superman images early last year, and the film’s not even out until 2016.
The double-edged sword there is that those obsessive fans then take all that promo material – images, trailers, leaks, news reports, rumours – and from there judge the film before it even comes out. Not that that’s a judgement on fans. Picking things apart is a heck of a lot of fun. Getting hyped is fun.
Sometimes, though, it doesn’t work out that way for the studios. Sometimes, the audience finds more to be upset than excited about when they peruse the superhero schedules. Recastings, reboots, and replacements abound in the ten upcoming comic book movie decisions that have already angered fans.
