He walked down the hall to her bedroom, passing his own in his wanting to get to her. The door was open when he walked in, but the girl on the kitanda was not the one he was looking for. She looked up when he entered, an apologetic smile on her face.
“Is something wrong?!” he asked.
“No. Not exactly.”
“Where is she?”
“She's fine. She just had to get out for a bit.”
“Where is she?”
“California, I think.”
He blinked, the words catching him for the first time.
“Wait wewe mean she's not here at all?”
“That's right. She wanted to wait for you, but alisema she was getting too restless. She needed a break.”
“When was this?”
“Early this morning. She left wewe a note. Here.”
She handed him a folded piece of paper to him and he opened it. He recognized her handwriting but something felt wrong. Unable to place it, he read the note.
Alek,
Sorry I can't be there right now. I wanted wewe to come with me, but couldn't stay anymore. Don't worry about me. I'll be back soon. I'm safe. I just needed to get back to old roots for a bit. Again, I'm sorry to leave without telling you, but I needed the room. I'll tell wewe everything when I get back. wewe can't call cause I don't have a phone. But I'll be back soon. Wish wewe could have come with me au could have told wewe in person. I upendo you.
Tara
He looked up and saw the sorry smile on her face again. She gave a small shrug.
“She asked me to get it to you.”
“Thank you. Do wewe know when she'll be back?”
“She planned to return within a week.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
“Yeah.”
She watched him leave and let out a sigh.
