She sat slumped at the mahogany desk, elbows propped onto the edge and hands kept together holding a pale picture frame. Her auburn hair was pulled up into a messy bun, and her freckles became even zaidi obvious with only the light of a three-wick candle in the corner of the desk. A pained smile was formed on her face, and stained tears to match.
There was a knock at her bedroom door. She quickly and quietly tried shoving the picture into a drawer, but accidently leaving a corner of it sticking out and therefore the drawer only partially-closed.
Another knock.
“Bella?”
“Uh, yeah- come in!”
He walked in, wearing grey sweatpants and his signature black v-neck tee.
“Just checking to see if wewe were here. wewe okay?”
“Yeah, yeah,” She wiped away what tears she could with the end of her sleeve, “just thinking.”
“It’s almost 3 in the morning…About what?” He walked over to sit on her bed.
There was a pause, and she looked at him with a sigh. “Do wewe think it was a mistake, me leaving the team?” He cocked his head slightly, shifting his position on her bed. “No. Do you?”
“I mean, at the time it seemed like the right idea. And it still does- but I just feel bad, wewe know? I mean, they-“ Her voice softened “…they think I’m dead.”
“But the fact is, you’re not. You’re right here, with people who care about wewe instead of just using wewe because wewe can spew fire.”
“I know that, E. I just- wewe know!” She groaned out of frustration and propped her elbow up onto the table, resting her chin on the juu of her fist.
The two sat there, in silence, for several minutes. E yawned and alisema hesitantly, “Bella, I have a meeting in-“ he checked his phone, “-4 hours. So, unless wewe really think wewe want me he-“
“No, no. wewe go get your sleep. I had 3 cups of coffee a little while ago, so I’ll be awake for a while. Maybe I’ll go for a run au something, but wewe should rest.”
He stumbled off of her kitanda and passed kwa her. When at the door, E turned and the glare that the glass frame and the candle had produced caught his attention, “What’s that?”
“What’s what?”
“This.” He slid open the drawer and pulled out the picture frame with the photo.
“Oh, yeah. It’s-“
“It’s the frame I gave wewe for your birthday.”
“Yeah, that it is.” Bella gave a soft chuckle, “But it’s not like I was going to fill it with a picha of you. I see wewe every day.”
She took the picture from his hands and stared at it a moment before speaking again. “Well, that’s Artemis,” She used her index finger and pointed her out. “Then there’s me- well, obviously.”
E laughed, “Digging the bright machungwa, chungwa hair.” As Bella had when she first joined the team. Bella gave an embarrassed blush.
“And then that’s Kaldur.” She gave a quiet sigh, but quickly brushed it off. “Then Robin jumping in behind us.” Bella motioned to the small boy behind the three who seemed to have just barely been tall enough to be seen. “M’Gann and Conner talking in the background; and that whole orange-ish blur over the picture? That’s Wally.” She gave a quick laugh, “He made it out of the jikoni just in time to see us take the picture, so he tried to jiunge in but overshot the distance kwa a bit.”
Red yawned, “That’s great. Well, see wewe when I get back.” He gave her a pat on the shoulder; “Make sure to blow out the candle before wewe go to bed. I don’t want two moto hazards in this apartment.” She smiled. “Yeah.”
The door closed, and Bella propped the picha up in the corner of her desk. Without looking away from it, she quickly blinked, as the moto seemed to blow itself out.
