The Macross series is supposedly really good! I haven't watched it myself, but the muziki and art is gorgeous from what I have seen. That one's also kind of old.

While it's not like it's underground, Akira's a great movie/manga. It was super maarufu in the 80's and was largely responsible for introducing anime to the west! It definitely lives up to the hype. The picture I'm attaching is of my inayopendelewa character from it, Kaneda! Serial Experiments Lain is relatively unknown, but I see that there is a small shabiki following on here.
