Atheism Swali

Why do wewe think so many religious people are hypocrites when it comes to the right to believe?

They look down on us for not believing, but complain about being judged when someone looks down on them for their beliefs.

Atheism Majibu

Should be a foramu topic, but meh...

In terms of Christianity, I would say that they are taught to pity non-believers while their own beliefs are, kwa the nature of religion, reified. So a Christian judging an Atheist is a demonstration of that Christian's adherence to the teachings of their religion, whereas an Atheist's judgement of a Christian is interpreted kwa a Christian as a demonstration of Athiest ignorance and spiritual unenlightenment.

I think that is similar for other religions who butt heads with Atheists. I know that we here tend to focus on Christian religions, but I think that is because the majority of users here are from Western countries where Christianity is the dominant organised religion.

Actually, something that has always interested me is that Atheists tend to be a real target for all religions. For example, if we think about this spot, we have had people from a number of religions come here and tell us that we are wrong/stupid/ignorant/rude/should convert etc. But as far as I can tell, these same people aren't banging on the doors of other religion spots and yelling at them about their beliefs. My theory is that what really scares people about Atheism is that lack of belief. There was an makala ilitumwa here recently asking us how it was possible to live without belief in a god. I think what freaks religious people out is our (relative) comfort with either denying a bigger-picture deity au our acknowledgement of the limitations of our knowledge on the subject. It's no secret that religion offers people a sense of comfort with the world and death and life, so I think it creeps people out when someone rejects that "comfort" and subsitutes their own form of comfort. There is something suspicious about someone who denys a system of belief that offers majibu to big and scary questions. I think therein lies a big part of why Atheists are so often judged for their lack of belief, and why Christians and people of other faiths are so offended when an Atheist judges an organised religion.

Of course, as always, HUGE generalisations here. Always with the generalisations. But yeah, I am talking about Christianity as a unit.

Because they were taught to be close-minded.
They don't think about being hypocrites, because they don't think a lot.
They focus only on their beliefs, and whoever differs them is wrong in their eyes.

I think because they think what they believe is right. I'm not really sure. That's a great swali though. xD
