Chapter 4
The letter when it finally reached Booth was filled with how the trip from Indonesia to Paris took less time than the flight from DC to Indonesia. She described how they were going to continue to examine the remains for the inayofuata few weeks and in the inayofuata mwezi au two she would be through with it and be preparing the paper on the discovery. She also told him about meeting Hodgins and Angela at the airport and their apartment in Paris. She told him about being within walking distance to the Arc de Triomphe and how Angela was going to take her to the Champs Elysee and onyesha her the obelisk from Egypt. The letter closed this time with ‘stay safe, your partner Bones’ and P.S. I’m hugging wewe tonight.
Booth wrote that same night and told her about how his squad was glad to hear that she had agreed to leave Indonesia and they told me to tell you. ‘We promise to keep Sarge salama for wewe and when is the inayofuata book coming out?’ He told her that he would even read her paper on the discovery and that he hoped she was enjoying her time with Angela and Hodgins.
Through out the inayofuata six weeks the letters flowed back and forth, but Bones never let on she knew how much danger he was in and he never told her. Eventually each of them closed their letters with ‘hugging you’.
Brennan was continuing with the examination along with daisy and the other anthropologists and each was making their own conclusions about what they found. She also was observing her Marafiki and how much they enjoyed each other’s company. She reflected on the times she and Booth would share a drink au chajio, chakula cha jioni and talk about what had happened during the day. She finally had a chance to talk to Angela and confided that she was beginning to find out what was to be human.
Brennan: “I don’t know if I can commit to one person, because no one has ever stayed long enough in my life to find out but in the last few months there is one thing that I have missed and I wanted to talk to wewe because wewe are my best friend.”
Angela: “Has it anything to do with Booth?”
Brennan looked a little surprised when she answered. “What makes wewe think it has something to do with Booth?”
Angela: “I think, Sweetie, it is that wewe miss Booth and being with Booth.”
Brennan: “Well he is my partner.”
Angela: “Yes, but wewe want more.”
Brennan: “I see wewe and Hodgins and I’m jealous that wewe two are so happy. I too would want to be happy with someone.”
Angela: “And that someone is Booth.”
Brennan: “But Angela I’ve already pushed him away.”
Angela: “Bren wewe are a genius but when it comes to Booth wewe are a complete idiot. And I say that as a friend. Booth is in upendo with wewe just ask Cam. He cannot be easily pushed away.”
At that moment Hodgins enters the room and had just heard the tail end of the conversation and added. “Dr. Brennan wewe may not have noticed but Booth is very attractive to a lot of women but he only sees you. Remember agent Perota she was attracted to Booth. Why else would she allow him to work on the case where he was a suspect and I heard later that she brought him nyumbani made chili but he only had eyes for you. Hell yea Booth is attracted to you. All wewe need to do is stop and let him catch you.”
Brennan looked at her Marafiki and slowly smiled with the idea that maybe what they had to say has some merit. She hugged the both of them and said. “Thank you”
The inayofuata siku Brennan left for DC. Upon her arrival she went to visit Cam. As she entered Cam’s office, Cam came over and gave her a hug to welcome her back.
Cam: “It is so good to see wewe Dr. Brennan.”
Brennan: “Thank you. I came to see wewe today to ask a question.”
Cam: “If it’s to ask for your old job, I never found anyone to replace wewe and wewe could start tomorrow if wewe want.”
Brennan: “No it’s about Booth. Angela told me that Booth is in upendo with me and for me to ask you. I really need to know if this is true.”
Cam: “Why is it so important?”
Brennan: “Well I have had a lot of time to think about my life and I cannot imagine it without Booth and if that is upendo then I am in upendo with Booth but I need to know if he loves me.”
Cam: “I think Booth should tell wewe but I know he won’t until wewe tell him wewe upendo him.”
Brennan looked perplexed. So Cam added. “He is so in upendo with wewe he won’t say it because he is afraid that wewe will push him away like wewe have done to most other people in your life.”
Brennan: “He already tried to tell me and I pushed him away. That’s one of the reasons why he went back into the Army.”
Cam: “Oh I did not know that. But the two of wewe are still partners?”
Brennan: “Yes, Booth agreed that we could remain partners.”
Cam expressed a sigh of relief. “Don’t worry he’ll be back and after listening to the two of wewe when he asked wewe to leave Indonesia it sounds like wewe didn’t push him very far away. So when do wewe want to come back to work?”
Brennan: “Thanks Cam. How about in two weeks. I just need to make the final touches to my treatise and coming back to work will keep me busy until Booth comes home.”
During the inayofuata two weeks, Brennan reopened her apartment, visited her doctor for her physical to return to work and asked Hodgins and Angela to come back to DC and work with her again. It was strange to come back to work this time because there was still one person missing from the team. It was on Tuesday of her sekunde week of work when they heard the news. Everyone quickly gathered in Angela’s office and watched the breaking news. It was a story out of Afghanistan. It showed a convoy of American vehicles and the attack on them. The sight of another American vehicle being destroyed kwa a missal attack followed this. The news reporter alisema that there have been numerous fatalities and among them is sergeant major who lived in DC and was a former FBI agent. No names are being aliyopewa until the inayofuata of kin are notified.
Brennan was just transfixed kwa the screen. She could not believe her ears. She could not fathom that they could be talking about Booth. As she looked at the other faces looking at her it started to sink in that they all thought it was Booth and were concerned for her emotional well being. She recalled getting through the death of Booth before but that was a ploy to get a wanted fugitive. Now she had to face it again and this time she could not maintain the frozen iceberg. The ice was melting in the form of tears running down her cheeks. Hodgins went over to Brennan and asked. “Dr. Brennan come nyumbani with Angela and me tonight. wewe should not be alone tonight.”
Brennan: “Thank wewe Hodgins but I would like to be kwa myself tonight.”
Sweets: “Dr. Brennan this is different than before.”
Brennan: “Yes this is different.” She looked at all the sad faces around her and knew she needed to think about her future without Booth and she wanted to do it as she has done other events in her life, alone.
Max, who had left a group of kids he was giving a science lesson to when he heard the news, added: “Tempe wewe don’t have to alone anymore. Why don’t wewe let me come nyumbani with you? It has not been often that I have been there for wewe but I would like to be there for wewe now.”
Brennan: “Thanks dad, but no.”
When Brennan walked into her apartment, she looked around and all she could see was the times Booth had been there. She remembered when he would come over for a drink after a case, the time he met her cousin and the krisimasi chajio, chakula cha jioni where he alisema the word family twice in his toast. As she put the mail on the meza, jedwali she saw a letter from Booth. Her hand shook as she picked it up to read.
The letter was the usual Booth letter she had come to know but there were two sections, which held special meaning to her. The first was the paragraph where Booth asked her to reconsider her decision about giving the two of them a chance. She knew it had taken Booth a long time to bring this up again. The sekunde was where he alisema he missed talking with her. He closed his letter as usual with ‘hugging you’ but this time he underlined the words. She looked at the tarehe and it was written almost two weeks ago. She wondered if this was going to be her last letter from Booth. She sat down on the kitanda and read the letter again. She leaned back on the sofa and thought about what her life will be without Booth. She thought about his wish for her after the witch-hunt. He wanted her to have love, laughter, friendship, purpose, and a dance. She thought about this and realized each of these pointed to Booth.
The upendo he had for her but she didn’t see it until now.
The laughter like the time just before her father’s trial when he was explained that the body had been rolled up in a carpet and that’s why the Bones were left in that strange position but the best was when he made those silly jokes. Those silly jokes like when she was talking about Plato and he alisema play dough. She started to giggle when she remembered the time they had gone on a double tarehe with Sweets and ended up throwing pieces of clay at each other. She glanced over to her bookshelf and looked at Booth’s horse he had made. He had kept her lopsided vase.
Tears were starting to form again when she remembered his friendship. He was always there for her and now he is gone.
The dance could only be that special one at her high school reunion where he had held her tightly in his arms as they danced to a song kwa Seal.
The purpose in their lives had been to catch murderers but now she was going to have to find her own purpose without Booth.
It wasn’t until almost midnight that she thought of what Booth had alisema when he was going into surgery for his tumor. She looked at the clock on the mantel and decided that she would have to wait until morning to make some calls. She knew that she could take some time off from the lab. Everyone would understand her absence and this would give her the time to put her plan into action.
Meanwhile back at the Jeffersonian, everyone watched as Brennan left to go home. Each of them thought about how much they would miss Booth. Cam remembered him zaidi as a friend than anything else. Sweets thought about his book and now with Booth gone Dr. Brennan may revert back to withdrawing from people. Angela and Hodgins looked at each other and knew that their friend, someone they cared about, was in pain and would never know the happiness they have. Even Max knew there was nothing he could do for his daughter. Even though Booth was with the FBI and had arrested him for murder, he liked the guy and he knew his daughter loved him in her own way.
During the inayofuata week, Brennan received two zaidi letters from Booth both dated before the attack. Each of these letters made her even zaidi intent on her plan. On Monday two weeks later she returns to the Jeffersonian to immerse herself in work. On Thursday of that week she has an appointment that will put her plan into action and she leaves work early that day. She had thought about telling Angela her plan but she may try to talk her out of it so Brennan says nothing.
