I think we're confusing education with intelligence which are two separate things. Merida may seem short-sighted but she is shown being educated by her mother about the history and lore of her kingdom and she even used that knowledge to mollify the lords. Snow White lacks both formal education and apparently common sense since she trusts an ugly old stranger with magic apples.

Snow White is the youngest princesses taking place in the oldest time. At the time of her release, the filmmakers weren't pressured to make the story feminist and modern as with the newer princesses. It's safe to say she wouldn't have had a chance for education considering the times, even in her fantasyland kingdom. Merida does seem to be more intelligent and educated. Belle is literate which was rare for women at the time. She was also the inventor's daughter so she is surrounded by engineering and science all the time so she must have a grasp on it. Pocahontas is smart in a different way. Rapunzel had lots of time on her hands to be creative and was also literate.

As I said before, she is the youngest Disney Princess and she lived with the Queen as a servant for most of her life. And I doubt the queen cared about her education. Also, her decisions are unwise. I know she was just being kind, but she let an old strange woman in the house even after the dwarfs warned her not to let anyone in the house.

How was Aurora eliminated before Snow White? She at least made some smart decisions. Snow White? She was warned that the Queen could find her and she could be anywhere and look like anybody even be invisible and she was just careless and didn't think about that. Singing while baking with a window opened. Yeah, she really knows how to protect herself.
Plus she is 13-14 and really young and most likely not educated.

Why are people choosing Merida. Yeah, getting a spell to change her mother isn't right but she is quite smart and educated.
She knew that she could shoot for her own hand, and she solved the riddle in the end, she is also street smart, and her mother surely did educate her well.
