How do wewe draw reasonable portraits?

I draw picha portraits, but they never turn out right. The drawing itself is ok, but they never look lie the person that I drew. How do I make them resemble each other?

I always take the sheet of paper i want to draw on, lay it over the photo(that i printed out) and hold it in front of the window so the light shines through...then its easy to draw the outlines of a face;)
