After an incredible season 5 finale, I definitely felt a certain post traumatic lost-ness that’s specific to being so dedicated to
Luckily, I was swept up by my Netflix account and comforted by some of the most original and fantastic television I had ever witnessed. So, here are five shows to fill that void in your heart left by our favorite medieval tragedy:
Based on the short story “Zero Hour” by Ray Bradbury, this science fiction thriller is one I have been looking forward to since I first saw the trailer last year. Co-produced by Stephen Spielberg and starring Lily Rabe (
), the series is already fascinating and chilling with only three episodes released thus far. Without spoiling too much, the show follows Rabe as an FBI child specialist who begins investigating odd murders at the hands of mere children and an imaginary friend called “Drill”.
airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. eastern on ABC and is available to watch on Hulu.
Fannibals were fighting extremely hard last year to ensure Hannibal got renewed for a third season and thankfully, after what seemed an eternity of waiting (a few months at most, but still), we received news that our favorite cannibalistic chef would indeed be returning.
Season 3 has delivered the most exquisite episodes of the series to date. Featuring a new setting and Gillian Anderson (
) joining as a series regular, season 3 was well worth the wait. It picks up immediately where season 2 left off and begins answering who survived Hannibal’s carnage last finale (which Fuller jokingly calls The Red Dinner à la
airs Thursday nights at 10 p.m. eastern and is also available on NBC.com.
And now on to the Netflix portion, where you can ingest all your binge watching desires. First up is
which I had very high hopes for once we learned Netflix was partnering with Marvel to develop four brand new original series. Needless to say, those high hopes were exceeded.
is an absolutely fantastic series following Matt Murdock as he journeys through the morally corrupt Hell’s Kitchen to face off against the terrifyingly mad crime boss, The Kingpin. With a diverse cast, stunning visuals, and insane fight scenes to match,
is a truly wild ride that is faithful to its source material and deserving of the high praises it has received.
season 1 is available to watch on Netflix and has been renewed for a second season.
, I have been a huge fan of showrunner Jenji Kohan. Her social commentary and characterization is absolutely honest and unique to Kohan and her material. In those,
While season 3 is less violent than season 2, (due to the absence of crime boss “Vee”) it instead delves into the backstories of characters we hadn’t dissected yet including Boo, Nikki, and Pennsatucky. This season shows the inner struggles of these characters and their victories in becoming and accepting themselves. Unsurprisingly, due to its immense success,
1) ‘Sense8′ (Netflix, J. Michael Straczynski, Lana Wachowski, & Andy Wachowski)
is but it may not do it justice. The show is tremendous in every way. It’s one of the biggest shows I’ve ever seen in that it’s completely international. Filmed in nine cities and eight different countries,
prides itself in its diversity as it explores issues not often seen in science fiction such as sexuality, gender, religion, identity, and politics.
The series follows eight individuals who have been chosen and linked telepathically as they are hunted by Whispers who seek to destroy them. Their link allows them to access each other’s knowledge and skill set as well as share an emotional and mental link. Like
is more than simple visual material, it is an

Literally just finished watching Sense8 and it hands-down, give no f*cks amazing. The fact that this show exists in all it’s fluid sexuality and gender-bending glory gives me hope that maybe the world will be okay.
Get paid 90 dollars /day for working over the internet from comfort of your own home for couple of hrs on a daily base… Get regular payment once a week… You’ll need a computer, internet connection, along with a little spare time…
Everyone, please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and watch Sense8. It’s probably going to be one of the weirdest shows you’ve ever seen, but it’s so amazing. There are eight main characters (all from different races, nationalities, and sexualities – so if you want diversity this is definitely the place to find it) and you’ll end up caring and loving all of them.
I really WANT watch it, but does the fact that it hasn’t been renewed for season 2 mean that they canceled it kinda like firefly? Because if so, I might not watch. :(
Not at all! Sometimes Netflix just takes awhile to announce renewals. They didn’t even announce season 2 of Daredevil right away.
Oh okay, thanks! – I guess I have a marathon ahead of me! :)
They may be just trying to iron out the schedule, as such a vast show would require a lot of planning, with an extra side of planning, but if you have Netflix please watch it, it will give them more reason to renew it, it’s a slow burner for sure but man does it drop some scenes to be remembered (is it just me or is it really hot all of a sudden).
Wikipedia says that the Wachowkis have 5 seasons planned – and Netflix was very quick to pick it up so hopefully they love it enough to fund all 5 they want!
Or do yourself a bigger favor and watch Orange is the New Black instead, which has plenty of diverse characters, gay sex and a transgender actress who can actually act. Crazy Eyes’ space smut story sounds like it would make a better Netflix show than the dull, plodding Sense8. Spinoff, maybe?
I watch Orange is the New Black, too. It doesn’t have to be one or the either. I just specifically mentioned Sense8 because it’s the newest and not as many people know about it yet. I guess you didn’t like it, but a lot of people love it. Also, while they’re both incredibly diverse, OITNB doesn’t have any South Asian characters so I really liked seeing brown people in Sense8. It is so rare to see a brown person on my screen (unless it’s a plot line involving the Middle East and terrorism, ugh).
Or you can watch both – why does your comment need to be exclusionary?
Don’t forget Penny Dreadful. Hands down best show currently on TV. All praise to Eva Green who is giving the best acting performance on TV.
I adore Penny Dreadful, but think Outlander has better acting in my opinion.
Vikings is also available from Amazon Prime. There is always Orphan Black. Seasons 1 and 2 are on Prime. Hopefully they add season 3 soon. Netflix has season 1 and 2 of Agents of SHIELD.
Season 2 of the 100 isn’t on Netflix. This article got me excited thinking it been added.
Penny Dreadful is better than any show in this list. Including Game of Thrones.
Orange is the New Black and Daredevil are good recommendations. Sense8 is okay if you don’t mind poor pacing, cliched characterizations, flat, expository dialogue and occasional bad acting.
throwing in my vote for Vikings, Penny Dreadful, Spartacus and Outlander. Three of these shows are renewed and one is done (Spartacus is so criminally underrated because the first few eps WERE trash, but the entire show is beyond entertaining and emotional- and yes there’s violence and a lot of sex)
