Game of Thrones not returning to Girona for season 7, but still castle-hunting in Spain

I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Game of Thrones not returning to Girona for season 7, but still castle-hunting in Spain | Watchers on the ukuta | A Game of Thrones Community for Breaking News, Casting, and Commentary
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Though we’re still enjoying season 6, we’re already looking ahead to next year and we have some locations news today, thanks to our friends at
will not be returning for season 7 filming to Girona, the city in Catalonia, Spain that served as a major location for season 6.
‘s source seems to be confident that it’s not happening this year. It had been reported in April that Girona was in negotiations for
to come back for next season, but apparently those talks didn’t work out.
Girona provided the backdrop for many key scenes this season in Braavos and King’s Landing. The confrontation at the sept of Baelor, blind Arya begging, the scenes with the Braavos theatrical players, and an action sequence coming in next Sunday’s episode (spotted in the episode 8 trailer), among other scenes, were filmed in the city.
The show not returning to Girona seems to be more due to script reasons, according to
which leads us to wonder what this means for next season’s plots. Arya’s not likely to spend much more time in Braavos, given that she’s been stabbed and is running from the Faceless Men, but what about King’s Landing? The capital city of Westeros has always been a central focus in filming, which leads us to wonder if
In February, of this year while chatting on a podcast, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss discussed a scene they were currently writing, describing something  that had “happened today.”  They mention changing a particular scene from an interior, 4-character scene set in the throne room to a massive parade through King’s Landing, which would essentially become” a 3-day extravaganza” with a thousand extras in Dubrovnik. Was it an idle mention, as locations weren’t locked in back then, or is the show indeed headed back to Croatia? And if so, what is that small scene that may have become so large (unless the other producers smacked them on the hand and told them to scale it back)?
has some very intriguing news regarding other locations being scouted. They report that Fresco Films (the production company for
in Spain) has been searching all over Spain, looking at locations containing “castles”. (Unfortunately we can’t narrow that down as Spain has a whole heaping lot of castles.) They’ve heard from sources that the seventh season of
“will have a significant number of battles in castles or next to them.” With that info in mind, it certainly makes sense
Fighting around castles- that makes me think war is coming to Westeros once more.
L7R also reports that Fresco Films has been visiting northern Spain, especially the region of Galicia, looking for locations. It’s not confirmed whether the Galicia sites are for GoT or for another production Fresco is working on. As L7R notes, it would be a little surprising (but not out of the question) for GoT to shoot there since the cooler climate and terrain are somewhat similar to Northern Ireland.
will be officially filming in Canary Islands. Two weeks ago, reports from Spain told us that the islands were being considered for shooting this year, and apparently that location is still a possibility, despite the Girona news.

If popular theories and assumptions are correct, Arya leaves Braavos behind next week; King’s Landing becomes a pile of ashes in the season finale at Cersei’s hand; Dany and her people leave Meereen this season; and perhaps Euron sacks Oldtown, forcing Sam to flee. So there will not be a need for Girona. Any city, really, right?
White Walkers destroying a whole bunch of castles next year….
I hope the war against the White Walkers is amazing. And huge. Probably one of the reasons they’re shortening the next two seasons? The budget for the war against the WW could take a lot CGI and special effects.
And it will be weird with no King’s Landing next year. Since we have seen it throughout the entire series.
” They mention changing a particular scene from an interior, 4-character scene set in the throne room to a massive parade through King’s Landing, which would essentially become” a 3-day extravaganza” with a thousand extras in Dubrovnik”
Does this mean Kings Landing is in season 7, or were they talking about season 6?
I’m actually starting to think they will leave Euron’s sacking of Oldtown for the next season. I believe they will end his story with him revealing the dragonhorn, if rumours are to be believed.
Also, nice to see you Luka! Haven’t seen you in a while!
So imo they’re either using the castles for Dany’s conquest, Euron sacking places, Jon going to war (maybe to free the Riverlands), or Jon vs WW.
KL seems done. Maybe we’ll get Casterly Rock or Highgarden or Storm’s End. If Cersei torches the whole city, she has to hide somewhere. Or she’ll just torch part of it and stay in KL for a bit before she finishes the rest.
And it will be weird with no King’s Landing next year. Since we have seen it throughout the entire series.
Hopefully it will still be in the credits, like the ruined Winterfell back then.
it gets burned down, that is. But I also believe very strong in the theory. 😉
then we can’t say there will be no kings landing in s7, right?
So that means they don’t burn it….?
Might be. I’d like to see Euron do something before the end of the season.
As for why I’m not around a lot… Well, the off-season holds my interest more. The news, the speculation… 😉
Presumably Dany will arrive to a burnt down King’s Landing in the middle of winter, if her vision at the House of the Undying (seen again in Bran’s visions) is to be believed.
That’s what I was thinking. Dany and her army/dragons marching trough the burned city.
Kinda agree, the off-season was amazing. I want to avoid spoilers for S7 this time….but I don’t think I will have the willpower..
Season 6 was kinda different…. We put together many plot points already based off of the 5 years of speculation we had from ADWD, but next year will be completely and utterly blind
Btw, if Kings Landing is burning this season, I wonder if we would’ve heard of a massive fiery set piece like we did with the Dosh Khaleen temple? Maybe not…
They were discussing a scene they were writing that day, and this was in February of this year. That implies they were writing a KL scene for season 7.
Wow…so as may others have suggested, does this mean KL will no longer feature (at least in exterior shots)?
I’m going to Cordoba and Seville for a 5 day break this evening…cant wait! 🙂
When do we get confirmation on the directors and the start of the filming dates? Seems like this year it’s a bit later, since last year this time we already had casting notices and other stuff.
Really doubt it. That was a small-ish hut. And it was normal fire.
This, if it would happen will be Wildfire, my guess is that it’s CGI.
But why would it have been initially an indoor scene?
Oh really interesting.Obviously considering david and dan’s comments there will be king’s landing in season 7 but I think we are done with the faith millitant so no Girona and that makes sense cause there will be no braavos eitherand that was primarly filmed in Girona too.The fighting around castles is so interesting I’m guessing it has to do with euron and dany. The off season does have a certain appeal to it.I love the feelinng of putting pieces together.
As for the scene, well it’s just my speculation, I think they might have just wanted to show Dany inside, perhaps the throne room….but now they’ll show her marching trough the city…..?
I’m grasping at straws I know, just brainstorming ideas..
They will not wasting any time with Dany’s travels in Essos. I assume she will be in Westeros by ep1 next year.
I wonder what battles we will see next season. Dany’s are almost a certainty. Euron? Maybe Jon, Sansa and Co. in the Riverlands?
They will need King’s Landing in season 7 for Dany landing in Westeros! But it will be a burned city, there’s no need for Girona. Only CGI shots and studio. Maybe Dany will rename it
I’m really excited to know what will happen to Cersei. She’ll probably flee to Casterly Rock?
I think that Cersei will burn only one place this season. 😉
They will film KL scenes in Dubrovnik again for S7. But they won’t need Great Sept of Baelor for S7. 😉
Geralt of Rivia needs to be in Season 7. We needed him ever since this series began. No one messes with Geralt and lives to tell it.
Geralt of Rivia, the White Wolf and the Butcher of Blaviken. Fucking shit up in Westoros.
They will film KL scenes in Dubrovnik again for S7. But they won’t need Great Sept of Baelor for S7.
Do you think Cersei would burn only the Sept?
That is a possibility, but it means the pyromancers would need basements just under the Sept?
Don’t do this!!! Don’t you, freaking, dare hyping me!!
I don’t have the time to play the expansion!! 🙁
I’d love it if we saw Storm’s End. Dany could easily take the castle. I doubt it’s heavily defended now.
I hope Jon and Sansa head over to the Riverlands to wrap things up there. I hope they reunite with Bran too before that lol.
I imagine Euron will sack some towns and castles too.
I think their big scenes from S7 is Tommen’s funeral.
So, if that theory is right and Cersei burns Sept this season, and Tommen dies somehow, as everyone expects, his funeral would be in the throne room.
And D&D said that that scene was moved from the throne room to the streets of KL. I can’t see any other possibility.
D: It’s sad knowing it’s the last adventure for Geralt 🙁
This season. And everything in KL next season when Dany arrives.
It also goes well with the Lannister tradition of having a funeral each season (since season 4). 😛
I think they said, they will come to this world again.
But I don’t think Geralt will be involved, or that will see it until Cyberpunk is out.
My dream is a more open RPG, where we can create our own Witcher. Looks, personality..etc.
I am certain that it is dany speaking with tyrion.,daario.,jorah.,varys ( 4 men ) amidst a burnt down KL and dothraki .
The tell is in when they changed the scene from throne room to a big scene.
I am pumped for Cyberpunk 2077! If CD Projekt Red are making it, it’s going to be amazing. I hope they make a memorable and likeable character like Geralt!
Also hope the new Mass Effect will be good, hoping they’ll show something at E3.
Jamie specifically mentioned the Mad King stored Wild Fire beneath the sept
“. Aerys saw traitors everywhere, so he had his pyromancer place caches of wildfire all over the city: beneath the Sept of Baelor, the slums of flea bottom, under houses, stables, taverns, even beneath the Red Keep itself.”
This news makes me lean toward several things.
C. Cersei goes total thermonuclear on Kings Landing this season
D. All plot lines converging back to Westeros next season.
F. Lots of White Walker battles next season
So imo they’re either using the castles for Dany’s conquest, Euron sacking places, Jon going to war (maybe to free the Riverlands), or Jon vs WW.

that we will see Casterly Rock in TWOW. The most logical POV to make that happen is Cersei, presumably after fleeing King’s Landing after all goes to hell there. Jaime might wind up there as well, but I think she’d be there first.
Wow we are already going into S7 hype mode… going to be fun!
I wonder how long the filming will last this time.. maybe it’ll still be 5 months even with the fewer eps..?
HelloThere: Jamie specifically mentioned the Mad King stored Wild Fire beneath the sept

I missed that, thanks! That is some impressive hanging gun!
This seems more likely than Dany’s arrival scene being changed from the throne room to a crowd filled scene.
I don’t feel it’s likely, Dany going to Storm’s end. If she lands in Dorne , would she not directly head to KL? And yeah, I too want to see Jon get South!
I know there is still three episodes to go but I was sure Cersei would burn Kings Landing this season rather than next.
If it’s included who would be there, Dany maybe? Jon being appointed king perhaps but that feels too early if spoilers from this season are to be believed. Failing that maybe Jamie and the Lannister army returning?
This summer is going to be really interesting as non of us have the books to guide us now and we still await the three pay off episodes of this season. I am going to assume Dany arrives and causes chaos in the South, Jon finds out his parentage and that he is the rightful heir to the thrown so uses that to rally the realm but perhaps has to defeat Dany first? Euron will also play a part in a battle I am sure, perhaps vs Dany.

Same here, im also hopeful for some Elder Scrolls 6 news at E3 as well considering Bethesda is holding a presentation there again. Same with Red Dead 3.
The shots of wildfire exploding in the crypts in Bran’s vision have got to be the future. Caused by Cersei no doubt. They wouldn’t have showed us that if it weren’t foreshadowing.
True. I was hoping they’d incorporate Young Griff’s campaign 😛
And I’m always down for more castle porn lol.
It would have to look at my schedule. We’ll see.
Right, but is s6 just the Sept blowing up, or is it the whole city. That’s the question. One or both of those will happen this season.
I still think the wall doesn’t come down until s7. Too much has to happen before the wall comes down. Bran and BenJen are headed to the wall to fight the ww. That can/should last a little while at least.
If they have Bran fighting the NK/ww and the wall coming down, all squeezed into a couple of 10 minute segments this season, that will be a huge disappointment. There is a lot of story there that they can tell.
Plus too many other storylines need to get resolved before the ww get south of the wall.
I know everyone wants to see the wall come down, but I think we will have to wait longer. KL going up in flames might have to be our dose of mass destruction for this season.
This is my first season watch after following this site during the last off season. It does reduce the surprises, But not the anticipation. I am still teetering back and forth if I should stop following during filming. But it was so much fun getting some snippets and folks guessing what it can be.
I think the wall has to come down fairly soon either the end of this season or the beginning of the next, with 13 episodes to go you have to assume there is time for Dany to invade, causing chaos, for Euron to clash, for the Lannisters to meet their end (assuming they are not end game players), for Jon to do what ever he does after regaining Winterfell.
I wonder if the city tried to make a large cash grab now that the series is coming closer to the end? Sounds like they still wanted to use it but negotiations failed??
As someone already said, I think this scene will be Danny marching through the ruins of King’s Landing
Still, I think the fire will propagate to the entire city.
Scotland but I live in London. I’ve been meaning to go for a long while (even before GOT was shot there), so I really can’t wait. 🙂
Nope, we will see Casterly Rock in the prologue. From Jeyne Westerling’s POV probably.
Damn, I want to go castle hunting in Spain lol sign me up!
I feel the same about s7 spoilers. But I know avoiding them won’t happen! XD
Córdoba and Sevilla are amazing places!! You’ll have a blast there.
