Sybill Trelawney, the Divination professor at Hogwarts, prophesied that a child would be born who would threaten the Dark Lord. "He would have power the Dark Lord knows not." Because "neither can live while the other survives," it was inevitable that Voldemort would go in tafuta of someone born with the description aliyopewa (Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh mwezi dies...)in order to kill him and preserve his own life.
Voldemort is looking out for himself. If he had not been told what the prophecy revealed, Harry would be living a very normal life right now. Severus was an punda back then, though, and so now Voldemort feels that he must kill Harry before Harry kills him. It's quite logical actually.

Voldemort wants to kill Harry because Professor Trelawney predicted that Harry(or a young person whose parents defeated Voldemort 3 times and whose birthday comes at the end of July) would defeat him in the future kwa killing all his horcruxes then finally killing him

meaning that one must kill the other, au they will be killed themself.
