Chapter 4: The Awakening
Two zaidi days went kwa and Cuddy and House took turns looking after Thirteen. They told the rest of the doctors that they were simply looking after their employee not wanting everyone to know that were her parents yet. House sat inayofuata to Thirteen while she was still unconscious.
“Hang in there little girl you’re going to come out of this like a champ! I’m here and so is your mom we have been looking after wewe ever since your accident. wewe really gave us a scare wewe know. Don’t worry if I find the truck driver he will be hospitalized as well.”
The monitors started to beep a little and House knew she was coming around, he and Cuddy’s talking to her was making a difference and she was progressing.
“I don’t know if that means wewe can hear me and like what wewe hear au want to wake up just to yell at Cuddy and I but anything would be great. Open those eyes give us something!”
She remained unconscious and House remained kwa her side waiting for her to wake up. Cuddy came in to relieve House and sat beside her daughter and again held her hand.
“Hey baby House alisema he thinks wewe might hear us… wake up, give us some sign that wewe are okay and don’t have brain damage. wewe can even yell at me, anything will be great!”
A couple zaidi hours passed and Cuddy stayed in the room suddenly Thirteen opened her eyes. She tried to talk but couldn’t because of the intubations tubing.
“Hey! Welcome back. Don’t try to talk wewe need to be extubated.”
Cuddy left to get a nurse to come and pull the tubing out so Thirteen could talk. Nancy came in and extubated her and Thirteen began to speak as Nancy left the room.
“A… am I okay?”
“Yes honey you’ve been in a bad accident and have been in the hospital for a week and a half how do wewe feel?”
“Thirsty.”
“I’ll get wewe some water.”
Cuddy went to get some water and paged House to let him know she was awake. She returned with the water and let Thirteen drink.
“I I’m so confused. I heard everything wewe and Dr. House told me but I couldn’t respond it’s like I was locked in my own head with all these voices. Dr Cuddy… I don’t hate you.”
“Sssh wewe need to rest we can talk about everything later. wewe were in a bad car accident a truck driver struck your car and wewe were rushed here immediately. wewe have been so good you’re so strong. I’m so glad you’re awake!”
Thirteen laughed very softly.
“Do I get my strength from wewe au Dr. House?”
Cuddy laughed and grabbed Remy’s hand.
“You get it from me.”
“Dr. Cuddy?” Thirteen asked weakly.
“Yes?”
“I… forgive you. I just don’t understand why wewe and Dr. House didn’t want me? Can wewe explain that to me?”
Cuddy blinked back a tear.
“Baby it’s not that we didn’t want you. It’s a long and complicated story and we will discuss it when wewe are one hundred percent better okay?”
“No I want to talk about it now wewe owe me that.”
Cuddy sighed.
“Okay I’ll start. I was eighteen years old and a freshman at The chuo kikuu, chuo kikuu cha of Michigan I was pre-med. House was in his sekunde mwaka of med school and was getting ready to do his residency he was already a legend around campus from his days at John Hopkins University. I was intrigued kwa this so called medical genius and had to meet him. I audited his endocrinology class and we became friends. He helped me study and we soon began dating.”
House appeared at the doorway but didn’t interrupt he just listened as Cuddy explained what happened so many years zamani to Thirteen.
“We fell in upendo with each other but were both to arrogant and afraid to admit it to each other. Things started to get rocky between us and I decided to end the relationship we both had too much going on in our lives to be in a relationship but I never knew he would end up getting hurt kwa it all. About a mwezi after we mgawanyiko, baidisha up I found out I was pregnant with his child. I was terrified. I was now nineteen years old and ready to continue school and had no clue what to do with a baby. I never told House about wewe because I was scared of how he would react. I decided on my own to give wewe up for adoption and on March 14, 1984 that’s exactly what I did.”
“That’s why I had no input on what happened to wewe Thirteen. Cuddy never told me about you. To be honest though I don’t know what I would have done. I probably would have made her get rid of you. Not because I didn’t want wewe but because I couldn’t have wewe it would interfere with my plans of becoming a doctor. Cuddy made the right choice kwa giving wewe up.”
“Believe me though Remy that was the worst siku of my life. It’s funny I guess it’s God’s way of telling me I don’t deserve to have another child because he blessed me with one and I gave it away. Which is why I can’t get pregnant now I’m not worthy of having another child. I just want to be here for wewe now though and hopefully wewe will allow me to be your mom. God knows I want to be.”
“So basically the two of wewe fell in upendo in college, had me and then gave me away because I was an inconvenience? This is such bullshit! I want a DNA test. I deserve better than this!”
“Thirteen, Cuddy saved your life the two of wewe have the same rare blood type, which proves she is your mother.”
“What does that have to do with anything how do wewe know we have the same blood type?” Thirteen spat back.
“Remy wewe needed a blood transfusion and they had trouble finding a donor. House was tested but he wasn’t a match so I knew I could save your life. We have the same blood type, type a-negative. Our blood contains rare phenotypes which is why it is so hard for us to have blood donations. I was your only hope.”
Thirteen just sat in silence with tears streaming down her face.
“It’s amazing two of the people I admire and respect zaidi than anyone are also the ones who betrayed me the siku I was born. wewe can both leave I don’t need this.”
“Remy, please…”
“Get out!”
House and Cuddy left her room.
“God House she hates us!”
“No she doesn’t she just needs time to accept what has happened it’s kind of big wewe know.”
“She thinks we betrayed her which I guess I did how she can ever really forgive me? I can’t even forgive myself!”
“She will come around I promise Cuddy.”
“I hope she does I can’t kubeba the thought of my own daughter hating me.”
“She doesn’t hate wewe she is just very hurt and confused right now she will songesha on and forgive you. What else is she supposed to do?”
“She could completely disown us and choose to have nothing to do with us. I just want to hold her House and assure her that she was not a mistake au inconvenience. I mean she’s bringing us back together that should stand for something.”
“Cuddy, do wewe want to be with me?”
“I don’t know what I want I do know that I want to go in there and be with my little girl though so I am going to. She can hate me all she wants I’m still going to be there for her.”
“What about me?”
“House let me focus on her right now then we can talk about us I do want it to go somewhere. I learn from my mistakes and I do upendo you. It’s just this is too much for me right now.”
“Hearing wewe say wewe upendo me is all I need for now. I’ll talk to the two of wewe later I’m going to go nyumbani and get drunk.”
“Bye House.”
“Bye Cuddy.”
