Regardless of how you feel about Jaime’s perplexing relationship with his twin sister, there can be no denying that prior to his encounter with the malicious Locke, the two-handed eldest son of Tywin Lannister was one of the finest warriors in all of the Seven Kingdoms. Jaime had the honour of being made the youngest ever member of the Kingsguard in the history of the prestigious institution at the tender age of fifteen after the valour the young Lion showed in battle against the Kingswood Brotherhood.
Since those early teenage years Jaime has just become a more efficient killing machine. In the HBO show, though for the most part we see the Lannister languish as a glorified servant in the palace, we do witness Jaime’s ability to hang in there with Brienne of Tarth and Eddard Stark without seeming to be particularly tested.
Jaime is different from some of the other members of the Kingsguard featured later on this list because he is able to act with a ruthless independence which arguably makes him more unpredictable. In the very first episode we see him launch Bran Stark from one of Winterfell’s highest tower so he can’t tell the world the truth about his relationship with Cersei. Similarly, though he is condemned and ridiculed for it, Jaime was the only person in the court who had it in him to slay the demented Mad King and save the kingdom from the stranglehold he had it in.
