In "Quiet Minds" why did Neal take off his gloves before placing the key into the dark one's vault?

Was there really a point to that? Plus would he have been able to survive had he kept his gloves on?

Also in that same episode, why didn't Rumple give Belle the dagger when he absorbed Neal into him to save him?
