"So this is the kit destined to lead the Clan one day?" she sighed. She hadn't expected a small skinny scrap like this one. The kit's pelt was a sandy colour, like sand. "You are due to be someone's successor, young one." she nosed the kit. "Maybe not mine, but someone's." she picked the kit up kwa the scruff of the neck and placed it further away from her dead siblings. "Don't worry." she spoke to the kit. "You'll be salama in SpiritClan." she picked the kit up kwa the scruff again to carry her back to the camp. Who's the parents? If she has the parents I think she does, this kit will have to be watched. Her parents are dangerous. wewe can see in her eyes she will be someday too. thought Greenstar silently. StarClan had better have a reason.
Two moons later, the kit Greenstar had rescued for the future of the Clan was sitting in the nursery suckling from Greenleaf, her foster mother, inayofuata to her foster brothers Seakit and Redkit. The newly named Sandkit had been treated with hostility when she first entered camp, and some of that hostility was still there. Greenleaf gave each kit a slow lick. Dewflight, another of the queens, who hated the sandy coloured kit the most, entered the nursery.
"I can't believe you're suckling that piece of fox, mbweha dung!" she spat at Greenleaf.
"Greenstar told me too! Would wewe say no to your leader?"
Dewflight just sat down with her kits Frozenkit, Jaykit and Foxkit as if she hadn't heard. She sighed as her kits started to suckle.
The third and last queen, who had taken up her position in the corner of the nursery kwa now, Hawkfall, began to talk. "Dewflight, can wewe just stop being wewe for a while?"
Dewflight sighed, obviously outnumbered. "At least I had zaidi than one kit. That...that thing of your's is no bigger than a twig!"
"Dewflight!" Greenleaf hissed, anger flaring in her eyes. "Don't talk about Ashkit like that! wewe know Hawkfall had three but that one was the only one that lived!" she turned her voice to a whisper. "She's still very sensitive about that."
Dewflight let out a snort of annoyance.
The queens continued to suckle their kits in silence. Greenleaf was in the middle of the arguments between her two Clan mates. As always.
It was five moons later, and all the kits that were in the nursery five moons zamani were now sharing the apprentice den. All of them, even Ashpaw, had strong muscles. They were the only ones in the den, other than a slightly older apprentice, Blackpaw. Following their mothers, Dewflight's kits and Ashpaw and Seapaw and Redpaw had turned on each other. Sandpaw, like Greenleaf had been, was stuck in the middle of the fights. Naturally, though, she sided with Ashpaw, Seapaw and Redpaw. Blackpaw was mainly left on his own. Other than when Sandpaw provided comfort for him.
And soon, Blackpaw was in upendo with her. No one knew, not even Sandpaw herself. But the price of his upendo was deathly, like described in Sandstorm's Reason Of Life. But that's a different story.
Later, Sandpaw's harsh mentor Fishdew was teaching her some basic battle skills. If she ever did anything wrong, he would threaten to kill her, and she knew he was capable of that and he wouldn't hesitate. She was no match for him. She already had too many scars from him. Too many to count. Although her green eyes were always adventurous and sweet she can quickly onyesha her true colours, so Fishdew hasn't dared to attack her. Yet.
Sandpaw, now in upendo with Seapaw, turns into warriors with Seapaw and Redpaw...Before Frozenpaw, Jaypaw and Foxpaw, to their annoyance. But also before Ashpaw, leaving him behind like a kondoo, mwana-kondoo to the slaughter. The newly named warriors Sandstorm, Seafern and Redfur made it to warrior-hood, which is zaidi than anyone can say about Blackpaw. But although Sandstorm may have a huge destiny, Blackpaw loved her, but she loved Seafern, unaware of Blackpaw's feeling's towards her. But Seafern was unaware of her feelings and was soon having kits with Ferndapple, one of the older SpiritClan warriors. Just then did the medicine cat Poppyfern tell her. And just then did Sandstorm know her kits Cloudtail and Mistpelt were Blackpaw's doing. If she had known, maybe he would still be here.
