What mark?
Hiya' everyone, welcome to Theories Unlimited. My name's Amphitrite and I'll be your personal shopping assistant today, and I must say I have a whopper of a theory for you. Would wewe like to try a free sample? Cheese and weiners are currently on sale, in ailse- dang it! Did wewe guys see Stheno totally try to jack my article? Anyway, enough of my weirdness for today...well at least for right now...stop laughing...So, on to the good stuff. I don't know about wewe guys, but I'm pretty excited about the Mark of Athena. But, there is just one issue that pops into my brain every time I hear the title: The prophecy, well partial prophecy, from SoN. wewe all know of what I speak, if wewe don't, turn off the computer, get up off your keister, get to the nearest bookstore/library and pick up a copy of the Son of Neptune, fast! For those of wewe in the know, here's a recap of alisema prophecy.
Wisdom's daughter walks alone,
The Mark of Athena burns through Rome.
So what could it mean? I've been turning theories over in my brain left and right, and I've come to a conclusion as to what I believe it might be. First off, lets start with the theories I don't like.
1.Eee Gods! Percy and Annabeth break up!
No....it just doesn't suit them. Percy and Annabeth are that couple that everyone else wishes they were a part of. We know they upendo each other deeply because Annabeth searched like crazy for him, and even when his memory was gone he remembered her. Add on juu of that, the fact that Percy, when walking through New Rome, was begginning to plan a future for him and Annabeth. Now, if a man is thinking about marriage and kids, then wewe can bet he isn't going to let his girl get away. So, this doesn't even pan out right there. It's just not them. Even if they did, though, I don't see Annabeth as the type to get vengeful and turn sides...her fatal flaw is pride not vengence.
2.Annabeth will help everyone get to the doors of death! "The Doors of Me!"
Oh shut up Thanatos, and get out of my....sorry guys
Well, I do see her as a viable candidate for the "sign reader" but so is Rachel, Nico, and Hazel...I don't think this one is talking about getting to the DoD. I think the prophecy points to something a little zaidi sinister.
So are wewe ready for a trip through my brain? I assure wewe it will be awesome! All right, here we go!
When I read the prophecy, I came to the same conclusion that most of wewe did, Mark of Athena is a title for someone...or something. Most would assume, thanks to the first line of the prophecy, that it was either Annabeth au something that she had to follow. I admit, I didn't read much into it at first, but after rereading I came to a conclusion that has me absolutely worried. What am I talking about? I come from a family of hunters (although I do NOT partake in that activity, I don't kill things.) and I know that sometimes, especially in archery, one's target (living being au not) can be refered to as a Mark.
So, now we have my definition of mark making the Mark of Athena something that Athena has to/is trying to kill. Hmmm...now who would that be? Thinking within the subject of the series, it would have to be the Giant created to oppose Athena. That would be Enceladus...I know what you're thinking, no freakin' way! Jason and Zeus totally double teamed that dude! So what? In SoN Gaea had control of the Doors of Death, and Thanatos was chained up, pretty much defeating the purpose of killing monsters. There were baddies coming out of the wood work, and just as soon as wewe killed them, they came right back! If Gaea brought back Stheno and Euryale, then she would've definintely brought back Enceladus! Think about it, he's her son, he's a giant, and he's the smartest of his kind, it only stands to reason that he would be back.
Now, we know that the demigods are headed for the original nyumbani of the gods, that would put them in the real Greek and Roman regions. So, why would Enceladus be over there? Again he's the smartest, and since he is Athena's bane, he would have at least a touch of know-how in the tactics department. When planning a full scale attack of importance (i.e. An attack on the original Mt. Olympus) I would want to have the most brilliant of my army working on it...thus Enceladus was sent to the "Root Land" to attack the gods on the nyumbani front.
The demigods are going to the same location to stop the attack and to find the Doors of Death, and if wewe hadn't guessed already the "Foes kubeba arms" part of the Prophecy of Seven is refferring to the Greek and Roman demigods...because they were foes, but I digress, the demigods will be over there. If a demigod meets an evil scum sucking giant, what are they going to do? That's right, they are going to try to kill it, unlike what would happen if I stumbled upon one...lets just say I'd need a change of pants...So, presumably, according to this couplet, Annabeth would be the most likely to take on the slaughter duty. So, what would the "walks alone" part mean?
Question: How do wewe kill a Giant?
Answer: A god and a demigod team up and take him out Gangsta style!
Good answer...minus the G-style....that's just wrong...Yes, indeed, the gods must work with their desendants to destroy the giants.
But, what if Annabeth for whatever reason is unable to get Godly assistance? I'd say we would have one sticky situation...There is a possibility that since the old land is so far away from the States and the Gods' new nyumbani that they (the gods) may not be able to help over there, sort of like what it was like in Alaska. Or, the divinities could be otherwise engaged in protecting the (new) homefront and can't offer any help. Whatever the reason, I have a feeling that this prophecy has something to do with that type of situation.
So, what goes down if Annabeth is all on her own? I do believe it was mentioned in TLH that Enceladus could breathe moto au some such thing, and he also had some sort of power over volcanoes. That seems substanstial. In myth, when he tried to flee from the battle (with the Gods) Athena picked up, I do believe, the island of Sicily au in other accounts Mt. Aetna and threw it. She hit her mark, and crushed Eceladus under whatever it was she tossed on him and since then he was blamed for the earthquakes and volcanic activity in the area. If he's all fired up, so to speak and he wants to destroy, then it could be alisema he would burn through Rome, if he couldn't be killed...So, if we use this theory, here's my version of the prophecy in Mars form:
If Annabeth can't get any help,
Then Enceledus is going to kick Rome's butt!
Well, there wewe have it, makala # 16. I hoped wewe enjoyed it, and that it got wewe thinking. Feel free to discuss below, and leave your thoughts on my theory and your own. For now, this is your favourite Sea Goddess, Amphitrite, signing out...of the article...not the spot...I want to be around for the discussion.
