But who is Negan? And why are fans going crazy about him? Spoilers to follow.

Negan is the leader of The Saviors, a group of survivors in Washington DC who make a living clearing the area of zombies (and whose faces we first see in the latest episode\'s post-credits scene). An entrepreneur in a post-apocalyptic world, Negan makes a deal with the other locals to protect them in return for a share of their supplies.

Unfortunately, he enforces these deals with acts of brutality and murder against the people he is \'protecting\'.

Needless to say, he rubs up against Rick and his group, setting his sights on the Alexandria Safe-Zone.

Think of him like a more stable, tough and brutal version of David Morrissey\'s The Governor. Yes, we said

But at the same time, he\'s far from a complete monster, and the fact that he can be kind and sympathetic makes his terrible actions even more frightening. You never know exactly where Negan is coming from.

He\'s being played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan

We\'re sure Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a stand-up guy, but he has form playing charming comic book psychopaths after his turn as the Comedian in

Whatever his role, we\'re always happy to see him show up - whether he\'s petitioning for the \'Worst Father Ever\' award in

We know we\'re in safe hands with Morgan.

He makes friends with Carl and it\'s goddamn creepy

Negan takes an unsettling interest in the young Grimes, to the point where he lets him off for killing some of his men because he likes the boy\'s style.

Luckily, Carl doesn\'t seem too taken in, and Negan later tries to have him thrown off a wall so, in this case, balance is eventually restored.

Negan doesn\'t make an appearance in the comics until issue #100, so judging from the relative progress of the show his debut wasn\'t expected for some seasons to come.

But with the appearance of the Saviors in the mid-season finale, it looks like he\'ll be showing his face before season six is done. Surprise!

LEVEL TWO SPOILER WARNING: He kills a main character

Negan is responsible for a long list of fatalities, but there\'s one that stands out from the rest.

Our readers were quite evenly split on whether they were upset about the revelation that Glenn was still alive after he was left for dead, but those who weren\'t happy about it might not have long to wait for satisfaction.

As part of his first appearance, Negan decides to take revenge on a random member of Rick\'s group in retaliation for the death of some of his Saviors.

Glenn has the misfortune to be picked, and finds himself briefly on the receiving end of Negan\'s barbed wire-wrapped baseball bat (Negan is very protective of his bat and named it \'Lucille\', just in case the whole thing wasn\'t disturbing enough already).
