I personally think they chose Kristen because Catherine Hardwicke directed the first movie, and to me Kristen is the kind of actress wewe see in alot of Catherine's movies. Also, this was around the time when Kristen was getting recognition for "Into the Wild".
I dont think Kristen is a bad Bella, but I agree that she was not the best choice. I would have like to have seen Emily Browning, who they say was Stephanie Meyers' first choice, but we got Kristen, and I dont think she is too bad.
