The philosopher Plato was right-we live in a world of ever changing appearances. People tend to hide their true selves and identities behind fancy clothes, digital avatars, and mask that refuse to come off. When people do reveal themselves, the rest of us are often taken back a few steps as we marvel at their latent greatness. This is especially true within the many worlds and multiverses that exist within comic books. No one character is truly what he or she appears to be! And, that’s the fantastic part that keeps us all coming back month after month to read these little twenty-to-thirty page mashups of words and pictures that we call “comic books!”
When we decided to list of characters who were more formidable than what they appeared to be-our minds instantly exploded with a Who’s Who of characters and storylines. We wanted to avoid the usual trappings of list like this which normally are filled with the same characters from the same publishers. We wanted to invoke a response; a discussion within the digital world-even if you disagree with the characters chosen! The one and only criteria utilized in picking these characters was simple-Is there more to the character than meets the eye and could they potentially become one of the most dangerous people in their respective universes?
