*Food in the Avatar World*

Naressa:

"Hey all. As some of wewe know and thank wewe for being so kind to reach out to me and speaking to me, though I work in the medical field now I am a culinary school graduate and worked for over a decade in the culinary arts field. Have always been very interested in the foods of Avatar, though they are rarely mentioned. As such, based on seeing them and the brief mention some chakula are given, thought I would open up a discussion about the chakula and recipes from ATLA and LoK. Want to share my recipes. All of the recipes I'll share have been tested kwa me yes? Please enjoy.

moto Flakes
Inspiration: The Deserter
These give a solid one two ngumi, punch of sweet and spicy.
1 .lb unsweetened mahindi, nafaka flakes au bran flakes
1 cup honey
3 tbs crushed red pepper flakes
Over medium-low heat, cook the honey to a gentle boil. Remove from the heat. Add the mahindi, nafaka flakes and stir gently to thoroughly kanzu, koti the flakes. Spread out on a lightly greased sheet pan and allow to cool. Once cooled, gently break up the flakes until they are no longer clumped together. Place in a large bowl, add the red pepper...

Say what wewe will about Azula, but she's no doubt a complex character and at this point I feel as though they can take her character in any direction; she could either stay evil au become some kind of force for good. Personally I'm hoping to see her become zaidi of a sassy anti-hero like Regina Mills, I feel like that would work for her.

With that in mind, the first reason that I feel Azula will be redeemed is that I feel as though Mike and Bryan have hinted at it. They've stated in various interviews that Azula is savable and isn't pure evil. A long time back I had purchased a book version of Sozin's Comet. In the book there was a mini interview in the back. One of the maswali asked was, "Is Azula really as evil as she seems? au is there zaidi to her?"
To which Mike answered, "As with all the Avatar characters, even Azula has a softer side, though it's buried very deep. As 'The Beach' and 'Sozin's Comet' showed, she has a lot of unresolved issues with her mother. She really feels that her mother didn't upendo her as much as Zuko, and this drives her crazy, literally."

I feel like TyZula is a bit of a controversial ship, people either upendo it au they hate it. So I wanted to explain what has me shipping TyZula.

First and foremost is the silly and minor fact that they look good together. Azula and Tylee are quite opposites right down to their looks. Azula is a zaidi mature, sharper beauty. Where TyLee is has softer, cuter, more-baby like features. And I think that those opposite features really work.

Similarly I think their personalities compliment each other as well. TyLee is very sweet and caring and optimistic. Azula is zaidi goal-oriented and a realist. For this I think that the two could help each other out and pick make up for what the other lacks. Azula can offer TyLee some protection and defending; no one would screw with her au try to take advantage of her with Azula around. Likewise Azula could make sure TyLee's naive nature doesn't get her hurt. Likewise TyLee can help Azula become a better person. She could probably help her to relax a little as well. Heaven knows Azula needs that. I also feel like TyLee would be one of the most accepting and forgiving people in Azula's life.

This makala may contain some spoilers, particularly for those who haven't read Smoke and Shadow yet.

In The tafuta one common thing that kept getting bought up was Ursa telling Azula to "take off that mask, only then will wewe see your true destiny." Recently another layer was added with the semi-recent announcement of the Kemurikage becoming the moto Warriors--the moto Nation equivalent of the Kyoshi Warriors. And naturally Azula is their leader.

This just got me thinking about Azula's fate in general. Personally, I think that this role (as a moto Warrior) suits her way zaidi than being the moto Lord does. She always seemed like zaidi of a warrior to me; it seemed like she enjoyed the thrill of the conquer zaidi than the ability to rule that followed. I'm not gonna lie though, it was zaidi like one of those things that was in the back of my head. Like I knew I thought something but I didn't know exactly what that thought was. So up until now, I firmly supported Azula on the throne. And then the moto Warrior thing was bought up and it just clicked. For me Azula seemed zaidi like a warrior than a princess; though she of course is both.

Azula hadn’t really considered her appearance in any sort of way at all, much less she hadn’t ever thought herself unattractive.
It never seemed to matter.
Never seemed to come up.
Being a princess, even a solider of sorts, beauty wasn’t something Azula ever thought she’d contemplate.

And yet, the princess found herself standing in front of the mirror wondering what was wrong. She never dwelled on her looks and so she never had the chance to realize that she wasn’t pretty in the slightest. Hadn’t had the chance until now.

The princess rubbed the wetness out of her eyes with the back of her hand. Perhaps this is why TyLee got all of the attention and she got none. Perhaps it was a good thing that no one

Azula had always been praised for her confidence and poweress. Her intimidating presence and her sense of self-worth. The way she talked smoothly to people without missing a beat. And yet she couldn’t seem to muster any of that up now, standing before the mirror.

Set up like the last two, here's an makala about five songs I think relate to Azula and why. Songs aren't in any particular order.

1. Dysfunctional Family kwa Cinema Bizarre: I'm a threat to myself I'm a get Armageddon I'm a freak I'm a liar I'm a flirt I deny that I'm no good then I mess It up This song basically reminds me of post-comet Azula. After a certain point she did become a threat to herself; I mean she'd do things like jumping off of Appa from a large height that very well could have killed her if Aang didn't intercept. And the liar thing is pretty self-evident. I mean it was quoted in the onyesha that "Azula always lies". I don't think she always lies per-say but she's done it a fair amount of times for this to hold true. I get zaidi and zaidi strange I'm going insane I'm building it up just to break it down wewe get what wewe see the product of a dysfunctional family. This set of lyrics definitely reminds me the most of Azula. Her descent into madness was very clearly a rather gradual process--that is to say as the episodes wore on she in essence got "more and zaidi strange." The going insane part speaks for itself. And of course a good lot of it...

So I'm trying something different now. Usually I tend to type 'why I like my favorites' makala au 'why I don't like my least favorites'. So this time I decided to try something new and type about what I like about a character I'm not to fond of.
I decided to do this with Katara because, of all the characters on my dislike list, I think she's probably the most likable.

One of my inayopendelewa things about Katara is that she's just a genuinely nice girl. She always goes out of her way to help those who need her help--like that town she dressed as the Painted Lady for. I may not like her character but I am 100% down with that and I can relate to just wanting to help people. Along the same lines I can appreciate that she's a merciful person. Like when she decided not to kill the man who killed her mother. I would have kicked his punda a good one. But she let the dude live and that takes a certain kind of strength.

Despite some of my past arguments she has her selfless moments. I do think she's done some pretty selfish things--especially surrounding the water scroll--but she's also done a lot that was completely selfless; again I refer to the polluted river...

One of the things I noticed about Avatar is the significance of the spirit disguises. Each disguise speaks volumes about the character using it and reflects their personality sort of like their bending styles.

I’ll start with the Painted Lady and Katara;

The real Painted Lady was a lot of things for the people of Jang Hui. She was a protector. A healer. A beacon of hope. She was a water spirit with assumably a gentle heart.

This is not unlike Katara herself. One of Katara’s key character traits was her hopefulness and the hope she instilled in other people. And in assuming the persona of the Painted Lady she fulfilled the hope role already made kwa the real Painted Lady. Furthermore Katara is also a healer. Almost right off the bat this was established. And she didn’t fail there, not at all; she helped cure the sickly of Jang Hui. In destroying the factory polluting the Jang Hui river she also fulfilled the spirit’s role as a protector.

As I was posting on a different tumblr post I realized some things. Namely (and obviously each firebender has his/her own style.

Starting with Mako;

He tends to lightning bend with an open palm. The first shot is a bit hard to tell (as to whether au not his pinky and the finger inayofuata to it are actually touching his palm) either way around his bending is zaidi open then everyone else’s. Perhaps this is an indicatior that he doesn’t know how to do it as well, maybe it’s the opposite. Perhaps it’s simply another sign that the Avatar universe changed. As it got older there came new techniques.

Aang is interesting; his lightningbending (rather method of redirecting it) is very loose. His two fingers are spread apart. Every other bender keeps those two fingers firmly together. This I think is a clear sign that he’s new at lightningbending and is struggling to control it. The lightning is kind of pushing his fingers apart.

The zaidi days that passed, the wearier Azula grew. She was tired of long flights on Appa listening to the Water Tribe siblings bicker. She was tired of setting up camp on chilly nights. And of finding some space to sleep that provided enough distance from the gang. But that always left her a distance from the moto and heaven forbid she tried to start her own.

She was tired of sleeping cold.

Most of all she was tired of trying to sleep with her mother talking so loudly in her ear.

Azula folded her arms over her chest, waiting for the Avatar and his Marafiki to mount Appa. She huffed in disgust. The shaggy thing smelled terribly and needed a good wash. Even he hated her, of course he did, he’s the avatar’s pet.
Naturally she hated the bison back.

Zuko extended an arm.

She swatted his helping hand away, “I can climb up myself.”

“He was just trying to help.” Katara muttered in a tone that sounded all too close to the one Azula’s mother so loved to use when speaking to her.

It had been only three days since Azula arrived at Rockshire University. The campus, a rather large series of buildings sprawled throughout the rural area. Azula found the setting to be ill-suited for a campus that specialized in areas urban business, marketing, and cooperation.
That was after all what she decided to go there for—aspiring to be only the school’s best business major (minoring in psychology ofcourse)...a straight A, top-of-her-classes goal.

It would be…awkward not having Mai and Ty-Lee around to Converse and discuss matters with. Back in their high school and middle school—and quite possibly elementary school—days Azula would always present to them her projects before inaonyesha them to the rest of the class. au recite her speeches and presentations in front of them first.
Likewise the two would consult her when they needed aid on their own work.
The three always worked on projects together.
And for it, always got juu marks.

Before anything else is stated I want it to be known that I do upendo both Azula and Zuko; so no this isn't gonna be a Zuko hate/bash Zuko article.

So instead of getting straight into the actual matter of the agni kai, I'd like to go over why I think Azula in general is zaidi powerful than Zuko. This I will post from an older makala (so if wewe read this one wewe may as well just scroll down lol); [i]First and foremost, the obvious; Azula has Blue moto (supposedly hotter than any other fire) on the show. This is something unique to Azula and Azula alone. Where as Bloodbending is not unique to Katara. And metalbending is not unique to Toph. Others have done it before and (in Toph's case) after. Plus Katara can only do it during the full moon whereas Azula's blue moto and lighting are present at all times. And she is very skilled in using both.

The sekunde most obvious is that Azula has lightning. At the time--prior to the Korra era--few benders could produce it and fewer could redirect it. Azula was one of the few who could produce it and most characters have no way to redirect it as only firebenders can do so. In fact water is a rather conductive element for...

So after a long while I decided I'd make an makala discussing my general take on a few of the most common reasons users say they hate Kataang. Before getting into any of that I'm not trying to get anyone to change their opinion nor am I trying to stir anything up. But feel free to debate and give your own opinions.

So the first thing I see a lot is;
Aang is way too old for Katara.

I personally believe that Aang is only 12; he is physically and mentally so. This would make him only 2 years younger than Katara. Whereas Zuko is about 17 making him 3 years older than Katara. So really if anyone is 'too old' for Katara, it'd be Zuko. However I don't think age should affect genuine love. Especially since in both cases the age difference is so small.

Now if Aang looked and acted like he was 112 I could see the problem, but he doesn't so I don't see the problem. The reason him being a 112 mwaka old with the mind of a 112 mwaka old (in the body of a 12 mwaka old) would be an issue simply because he has that much zaidi life experience and is finally wiser. But this isn't the case. Using this logic I can argue that Zuko is too old for her...

Kataang au Zutara, we’re all here because we like one au another. I myself, am on the Kataang side. So I decided to share why in one neat little article. Some parts are taken from my other article.

Why I Like Kataang

First and foremost, I like goofy, light hearted romance zaidi than I do a serious and mature one. I like things that will make me laugh, something that isn’t full of angst and melancholy. Aang and Katara have zaidi of a cute and fun relationship. Don’t get me wrong Kataang has it’s mature moments; such as the moments mentioned in the paragraph below. I don’t think a ship has to be complex and elaborate to be a good ship. Kataang has a sort of a simple charm; everything just sort of fell into place and it happened very gradually, naturally, and realistically too.

I also feel like there was way zaidi time put into Kataang. Their relationship was budding from the beginning but didn't really start until season 3. In the pilot he wakes up and the first thing he wants to do is go penguin, auk sledding, he doesn't care about the cute girl looming over him...not in that way anyhow. If it was rushed then he probably would have...

Another burning sensation fired its way, white-hot, up and down Azula’s body. It was as if she’d accidently set her own body aflame. She clutched her blankets tightly and bit her cheek, so not to cry out.

Her skin felt moist and clammy, her strength seeming to trickle out with each bead of sweat—leaving her with a contradicting cold sensation. A feeling of emptiness, as if her own flame was flickering out. Slowly and agonizingly.

Despite her best efforts, a small whimper slid through her parted lips.

It didn’t matter.

No one was around to hear it.

She couldn’t risk the company. All of the others had been taken away. Shipped to an island some ways away from the moto Nation mainland. The island of the sick…the diseased.
Rich and poor alike, they were removed from their homes and whisked away from their old lives.
Quarantined.

The recently created council justified it kwa declaring as state of public emergency…world-wide public emergency. And apocalypse of sorts.

Apparently today is Avatar's 10th anniversary...here have a fic!

In one mwaka a person could accomplish much.
She had chosen to run away
Run away and not be found.

In two she mostly just stood alone.
Living only off of what the land would give her.
On most nights she was lonely.

The other three years became something of a blur as she counted them off. Everything seemed to be the same old thing. She didn’t know how she’d managed to go for five years all kwa herself in such a strange place.

She decided after those five years she was tired of being alone, hungry, and silently afraid. Decided that maybe five years was long enough for them to forget her face…and everything else she’d done. Perhaps she could make something of herself.

Something new.

Something different.

On mwaka five she left her makeshift nyumbani in the Forgetful Valley.
Her cloths were tattered.

She watched the girl, Xul, crumble for days. She was only 16. There wasn’t really much she could do aside from holding her close and telling her that it would pass eventually.

It was a rough job really, the job she did, trying to help those suffering from what everyone else called the ‘the insanity’ they were “crazy”, “sick”, “unlovable”. She much preferred to call to think of them as those who just needed someone to tell them are cared about…loved. A good number of her patients were in a state of distress pretty much all the time, Xul was one of them. These patients (young and old) were usually abandoned, she’d never let Xul fall into this category.

Despite it all, a lot of these people had made astounding recoveries under her care. Though a few of them were what she called ‘the regulars’—those who’d recover and then relapse and come back for further help. She welcomed them back with just as much care—if not more—as the first time.

Currently, Xul screamed at Azula telling that she didn’t know anything…and that she didn’t understand what she was going through. She would kick and holler, thrust and...

Modern siku TyZula Valentine AU.

Azula had never seen as much glitter and rose petals as she did when she opened her locker that morning. Open swinging it open the cutesy stuff fell upon her in a pink, red, and silver shower. She blew her hair out of her face creating another sparkly puff in the air.

That stuff probably wouldn’t leave her hair for another mwezi au two.

From in the corner she saw Zuko snickering to himself as he waited for Mai to arrive, he planned on giving her the most ridiculously sized stuffed frog.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Azula!” Ty-Lee flung herself at the girl—once again showering glitter all over the place. “I got wewe something!”

“Please don’t tell me it’s zaidi glitter.” Azula muttered picking one of the moyo shaped pieces out of her hair.

“Nope!” Ty-Lee smiled before excitedly thrusting a stuffed panda and a box of chokoleti into her arms. “It’s dark chocolate, wewe alisema dark chokoleti was your inayopendelewa right?

This is an AU fic for quite a few obvious reasons.

Azula’s fingers hovered over the stinging mark spreading up from her wrist to her elbow. She gently ran her finger over the tender red skin outlining it.

Part of her thought it was a bad idea to get the tattoo, but zaidi of her alisema it was one of the best idea’s she had in a while. The blue and teal ink suited her well, at least she thought so anyhow. It only made sense for her to wear the blue flames proudly on her arm…

Much zaidi sense than it did to always be reminded of the scars they covered.

The blue flame tattoo wasn’t the first ink job she had done—and if honestly was worth anything, they probably wouldn’t be her last. A mwezi prior she had gotten a mural of tiny jagged lines spanning from her ear to a little past the edge of right brow. The lines worked together to make an illusion of cracked skin…shattered like glass.

Broken.

Ozai hadn’t noticed it yet, she had taken to covering the ink with a new hairstyle au some type of expensive headwear. The man would add another scar to her collection if he ever noticed. To think,...

Sorry for the late update guys. My grandpa's in the hospital at the moment. He's doing fine though.

Azula woke up lying face up on her bed. Her head ached with a dull phantom pain. Her lips parted to call out for…she couldn’t remember, didn’t know whom.

Her vision was much too cloudy.

She tried to sit herself upright, sending a small ripple of pain over her body. She shuddered and her muscles seemed to give out sending her falling back to the pillow—basking in its softness. She had missed her own bed…her own pillow. How did she get there?

She felt a hand on her shoulder. “You awake?”

“More au less.” She murmured. “How long have I…”

“Just two days.” Zuko answered.

She gave him the best slap she could muster up. “This is all your fault wewe know?”

“I figured as much.” Zuko replied.

Neither spoke for a good while. When Azula grew certain that the conversation would not resume she let herself fall back asleep—basking in the warmth of her blankets and the silky mattress cover. She’d try to leave her kitanda tomorrow.

That night Azula dreamed.

After a long while of staring at the ceiling, the cold metal shackles biting her hands all the while, and enduring Ling-Ling’s attempts to make conversation, she had found herself in something of a sleep.

Her dream wasn’t unpleasant.

The dream was a bit of a blur; she was a little girl again. Ling-Ling and Heekul were both real people, her mother loving. Zuko had joined them in whatever game they were playing.

Azula, upon waking could most vividly remember the faces and the smells—freshly cut nyasi and her mother’s floral perfume lingered on the fringes of her imagination threatening to pour into reality. And they were smiling, everyone was smiling. Genuine, not hint of malice au cruelty.

If she were to have only one last dream before the upcoming operation took its toll…she’d choose to re-dream this one.

She shut her eyes in hopes of conjuring it up again. But the rottenness of her surroundings, the smell of death and decay—the general air of hopelessness and despair didn’t provide the right environment to purposely summon such a beautiful dream.

The lot of wewe are only good for experimenting on. And of the lunatics in this asylum your breed is the worst—with your silly voices and your ludicrous visions…”

Azula’s upper lip twitched into a snarl. The man was speaking as if he didn’t have an issue au two of his own.

"If wewe thought we treated wewe with neglect and abuse in the regular ward…the underground ward, well it’s a whole new world of torment."

Azula looked to the woman…Hiru on the operating table. And then she turned her gaze back to Tang-Shin who still up held that smug little smile as if he didn’t think she’d melt it off. With one fluid arm thrust she socked the man in the mouth, with a wave of blue flames.

Zuko found himself locked in another stare off with Kirah. The girl seemed ready to cave. They hadn’t spoken to each other in at least ten minutes. I

“No. She’s…Tang-Shin took her to get some sort of new therapy…she should be out soon. After he’s done, I’ll check with him and see what I can do.” Kirah replied.

“Am I playing nice now au was I playing mean before?” She asked before pretending to fill out some paperwork.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Even if Kirah intended on giving him an answer, a certain clamor coming from just outside offered an interruption. The door swung open—kicked in with such a violent force the glass of water on Kirah’s dawati rippled and vibrated.

Toph gave a wild shriek before bringing her fist into the ukuta leaving a decent sized crater on it’s already tainted surface. With another yell, a meza, jedwali sailed across the room. All the while Sokka and Katara struggled to keep the earthbender at bay.

No sooner had he thrown the first moto ball was he tossed to the dirt outside. They had him hugely outnumbered, he couldn't have possibly won. At least that's the excuse he made for himself. Truth be told, the days attending political meetings and signing peace treaties had him pretty out of shape where bending was concerned. It didn't help that there was a chi blocker in the equation.

And so he found himself laying there face down on the ground—unable to pick himself up.

His nose crinkled up as a cricketspider tiptoed its way through the grass. If he could flinch he certainly would. Cricketspiders were pretty harmless creatures but Zuko still hated the lot of them—which had something to do with the fact that Azula used to put them in his supu when they were children.

A ripple of fury dashed through him. That's how it was supposed to be; Azula in the palace making a nuisance of herself, doing everything in her power to live up to the 'annoying little sister' standard.

With each step Azula felt her body grow zaidi and zaidi weary. Each and every one of her footfalls zaidi wobbly than the next.

Tang-Shin was leading her down a hall that was just as bleak as every other. She wondered how the man navigated the place—everything looked the same to her; white au yellowing-white, lined with tightly sealed doors, and a floor that looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in millenniums. She chose to ignore the alarming red splotch near one of the doors.

Was that what she had been sleeping on?

She shuddered.

They reached the end of the hall where stood a giant knobless door.

Tang-Shin offered the man guarding the door a strange signal.

Azula found it odd. Who would choose to guard a heavy metal door that didn’t even have a knob. Perhaps it was a push door and didn’t need one. As she pondered that one over, the guard put himself a few good feet away from the door. He proceeded to drag it open.
