Gandalf is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In these stories, Gandalf appears as a wizard, member and later the head (after Saruman's betrayal and fall) of the order known as the Istari, as well as leader of the Fellowship of the Ring and the army of the West. In The Lord of the Rings, he is initially known as Gandalf the Grey, but after returning from death as Gandalf the White. As explained in The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf spent the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings travelling Middle-earth in tafuta of information on Sauron's resurgence and Bilbo's mysterious ring, spurred particularly kwa Bilbo's initial misleading story of how he had obtained it as a "present" from Gollum. During this period he befriended Aragorn and first became suspicious of Saruman. He spent as much time as he could in the Shire, strengthening his friendship with Bilbo and Frodo, Bilbo's heir.

Severus Snape is a fictional character in the Harry Potter book series written kwa J.K. Rowling. In the first novel of the series, he is hostile toward Harry and is built up to be the primary antagonist until the final chapters. As the series progresses, Snape's character becomes zaidi layered and complex. Rowling does not fully reveal the details of his true loyalties until the end of the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Over the course of the series, Snape's portrayal evolves from that of a malicious and partisan teacher to that of a pivotal character of considerable complexity and moral ambiguity. Snape primarily teaches Potions at Hogwarts, though in the sixth novel he teaches Defence Against the Dark Arts, a position which he was known to have desired throughout the series. He ultimately becomes Headmaster of Hogwarts in the final novel. Rowling has described him as "a gift of a character".

Heathcliff is a fictional character in the novel Wuthering Heights kwa Emily Brontë. Owing to the novel's enduring fame and popularity, he is often regarded as an archetype of the tortured Romantic hero whose all-consuming passions destroy both himself and those around him.

Legend has stereotyped him somewhat into a romantic hero, and he is generally known zaidi for his upendo for Catherine Earnshaw than his final years of vengeance in the sekunde half of the novel, in which he grows into a bitter, haunted man (although there are also a number of incidents in Heathcliff's early life that onyesha that he was an angry and sometimes malicious individual from the beginning; again, these tend to be glossed over in the maarufu imagination). His complicated, mesmerising and altogether bizarre nature makes him a rare character, with components of both the hero and villain.
